Looking for tips on how to ameliorate a previous ride with new stops
Quote from CuttingIron on 18.01.2025, 09:18Hello everybody,
Winter is here in Quebec, Canada and I'm planning my next trips for this Spring & Summer.
What I would like to do is take a couple of my favourite routes and add more stops and places to go. My plan was to show the GPX file on Google Maps and see around the track where there would be nice place to stop:
- A nice waterfall
- A tourist attraction
- Something bizarre that is worth seeing or to take a photograph (you know, just for a quick stop)
- Here's an example - https://maps.app.goo.gl/mhU5GiXGMiykhHdy5
- A nice coffee place
- Etc.
And at the end, I should be able either to see them when I ride along the way with Scenic (I know, the location alerts are not there yet) or at least, when I review my ride by editing it, I could add them for the next ride. I tried Google Maps to do that but it's long or not easy to do and I'm sure I'm missing cool places that probably only riders are interested in (you know when you ride, you find many reasons to ride, so I'm trying to build treasure hunts of sorts)
My question to you is, do you know of any web sites that might help me find those places using the GPX file for a favorite ride? Or any other tricks to find those places and I would add them in my locations. I'm looking for places in Quebec (Canada), Ontario (Canada), Vermont (USA) and New York State (USA)
Secondly, I would like to know if there is a trick to search for other rides that people made in Scenic. I know it was possible to search public routes from the community but I don't seem to find them anymore on the new version of Scenic. The other problem that I had is that there were too many offering and it was impossible to load them in the app but maybe there is a trick to thin out the list?
Thanks for any input that you might have

I'm not familiar with your area, but I can tell you how I plan these kinds of trips (multi day trips with some 'sightseeing' spots along the way):
In essence... I plan with Google Maps and place stops in the left-hand pane for those 'sightseeing' places. Then I export the Google Maps url into Scenic: https://scenic.app/help/import-from-google-maps/?seq_no=2
UPDATE: One more addition. I always plan (and I recommend doing that too), 1 route per day. So, first set start and destination for a specific day, and then find places/stops along the way.
As for finding those interesting places... I use a mix of things: Google Maps has the best and most up-to-date collection of places that I know of. In my experience, no other map provider comes close. However, those are mostly the "main stream" places. To find those really interesting and sometimes hard to find places that are not known by Google Maps, I do a Google Search. Most of the time local websites come up giving you some local knowledge on places. Then I find those places on Google Maps and add a stop. On my last trip I even used ChatGPT asking "What er some places worth seeing / visiting in or along .... ". Make sure to double check what you get from ChatGPT as it's not always correct 🙂.
search for other rides that people made in Scenic.
This is temporarily not available, but will be added back very soon. If you haven't read it already, here's why and when: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-the-whole-story/
Hope this helps a bit.
Best regards,
Guido

And keep up the good works!
I found another AI Gigabrain which can search in Reddit, very useful if you are looking for specific places using people’s comments
have a great day everyone
