Lack of road and highway route numbers
Quote from mattsz on 03.05.2025, 07:37I wondered whether this might be a good question for the new map customizer section, but I thought I'd drop it here instead.
Last October I lamented the gradual worsening of route number representation, from the very-useful, ubiquitous indicators in v3.1 to the very limited presence in v3.5, until their disappearance altogether by v4.0 with the new map provider. Here is a link to my post, which shows some examples: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/using-version-4/#postid-9409
I was hoping this would be addressable when the map customizer finally came back (hooray!)... but alas I see nothing that provides for this.
Where I live, once you leave the residential street areas, road names are basically useless. Roads are well-known by their route numbers, and actual route number signage on the roads is very good. Scenic used to show route numbers in obvious, legible "highway-sign" icons, which would almost always be visible at some point on the screen... now, nothing.
Guido, is there any plan for bringing back useful route number displays? Am I missing a customizer setting somewhere?

Quote from Guido on 03.05.2025, 10:21I’ll check, but road numbers should show. At lower zoom levels (further away) only road numbers should show. At higher zoom levels the road numbers and name should show. I don’t remember from the top of my head for which road levels this is implemented. Until what road lvl would you like to see numbers? I imagine lvl 6 and 7 roads won’t have numbers? Maybe lvl 5 neither?

Quote from ChrisD503 on 03.05.2025, 11:09I’ve got a similar road label question. I’ve noticed roads, even minor highways, that have no labels at all for their entire length. And some that are so infrequent that you have to track them for a long time to see what they are called. Here’s a screenshot of a highway with no labels. I’ve confirmed that the road label settings for all road types are visible at that level.
The coordinates for this screenshot are 45.893610,-123.131010

Quote from MjK on 03.05.2025, 12:00@chrisd503 I guess you miss the setting of the respective road level naming …
for example scroll a bit down where you define the road color etc.. there is a separate setting for the name / numbering of the road incl the zoom level when this appears
hope this helps, Markus

I'd like to see road numbers "down to" L5 (tertiary) roads. Two Mac screenshots, showing my local (-ish) riding area - from the coast on the right to the left edge of the map is about a 40-minute ride. In the first one, US1 on the right and ME3 along the top are L2 (highway/provincial) roads; ME17 and ME90, which cross lower right, are L3 (primary) roads; ME32 coming up toward the left side is an L4 (secondary) road. These are the roads you ride in my area when you're just trying to get somewhere. L5 and lesser roads are hidden - there's lots of empty space:
The next image adds the L5 roads - these are the "back" roads that one would want to ride for enjoyment, or when traveling and not in a hurry. They all have route numbers with visible signage when riding, which everybody uses to identify them. Their road names change between every town, nobody uses them. They should all be labeled with route numbers - not like ME3 is, though, that's too many (curious why that happens):
And since you asked (wait, you didn't ask!), I'd like to see the customizer give the option to make road labels (i.e. road name / number) visible at lower zoom levels. L2 roads currently cannot show their labels below zoom level 13; in rural areas, this isn't low enough.
The old route number labels, that actually looked like road signs on the map, were so much clearer and better than plain text that looks just like every other label on the map; will they ever be back? The openstreetmap website default map has route numbers enclosed in tinted boxes which match the road colors; even that would be a big improvement...
EDIT: I'll add that the roads that show numbers on the OSM default website map do not appear to show any numbers on my Scenic maps, no matter the zoom level...

I’m certainly not discounting the possibility that I did something wrong, but as shown below, I have the text set to be visible at lv 13, but it does not become visible until I zoom into level 19 on the map. I have also confirmed with all the other road types that my zoom level text view is set to no higher than 13, yet on some roads you have to zoom in much further than that to make it visible

I would never say anyone does something wrong, as there are a million options to look at and you hit a very interesting
When I look up Scappoose Vernonia Highway, it showed up (sorry did not switch scenic to the english UI) on level 17 - but not lower, kinda same issue you talk about. Also when I tried to identify the level of that road it’s actually Level 4 where change of zoom level let it disappear or show up again .. but as a soon ich changed the level and back it did not show up earlier than level 18 …
also changing the zoom level setting for the label, the label disappears even when inzoom level 18 as soon the label setting is higher than 13 .. it seams there is a mismatch or false data
guess Guido need to look into the data (one of the waypoints 45.791792,-122.913906) what’s exactly going on

Hopefully, Guido, you'll have some insight or suggestions!
Thanks, and keep up the good work!!!

Quote from Elric42 on 04.05.2025, 11:45I've also noticed that when planning routes, there are limited instances of road names. So, I'll be at at an intersection, and will have to scroll some distance from that point to even see a road name, even for major roads.
Is there a way to adjust that in the default map settings, or do I have to make my own, custom map?
Thanks,

Quote from mattsz on 06.05.2025, 06:03Sorry for beating this dead horse, Guido, but I think this thread is getting a bit sidetracked. There's another current topic concerning labels and zoom levels, which I think is a different subject.
Assuming a particular stretch of road is known by OSM to be part of a route number, is there a way to get the Scenic map to display the route number? My example uses Maine state route 105, which meanders east-west between Camden and Augusta. The following link shows it in its entirety:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/3249435#map=10/44.2651/-69.4163
Now I see that "relation" tag, and I can see the long list of associated street names. OSM seems to "know" that all these road segments go together to make up the length of route 105, but I have no idea whether Scenic can take advantage of this.
If (at the OSM link above) I zoom in by clicking the "+" zoom button three times, route labels appear and display at intervals as I scroll along route 105's whole length. In Scenic, no route labels appear at any zoom level... until it changes from a tertiary road to a secondary road (I note that the secondary road label actually doesn't show the name - only the route number - unless the map is zoomed way in).
In Scenic, the secondary roads show route numbers; tertiary roads show street names. OSM clearly knows the names and route numbers of each of those segments. Is there a way to get the route numbers to show on the Scenic map? The use of the 10 (or so) street names that make up route 105 aren't useful for planning, whereas simple "route 105" is!
OSM maps show route numbers as block, or "sign" icons; Scenic maps used to show similar route "signs," can this be brought back? I think this would be a substantial improvement...

Quote from Guido on 06.05.2025, 12:47I'll make some changes for the next update. Increase text priority of road references (for example, at the moment, if there is an overlap with a city name, the city name will "win")
Having said that, Scenic SHOULD show road references (numbers) for lv1 to lvl5 roads based on the 'ref' or 'int_ref' tag of the road (OSM way), starting from the label "visible from zoom level" set. 5 zoom levels above, Scenic will show the road reference (number) AND the name. I'll also tweak that a bit for the next road name.
I've noticed that the road numbers disappear too quickly when zooming out. I've reported this to the map provider, as I can't explain this. Even where there is no overlap with a city name or something like that.
At the moment it's not possible to show signs or blocks for road references.

In one of the links you sent it showed the name in a single line contained within the boundaries of the road, instead of stacked outside the road. Is that something we may be able to configure at some point? Having the single line label in the road boundaries makes the map less cluttered, overall.
Thanks for all you do!

Quote from Guido on 06.05.2025, 13:51That’s not something I can configure. I’m guessing the map framework decides dynamically if it’s 1 or 2 lines based on the amount of text and what elements are around.
I’ll report back once I hear from the map provider.

@guidomm This would be awesome. It's a pain when route planning to have to scroll far from the intersection to figure out what the name of the other roads are.

Quote from mattsz on 20.08.2025, 10:07Hi Guido -
I'm still struggling with the lack of route numbers that are displayed on the map for most of the rural roads in my state (route numbers = very useful; road names = virtually useless). While experimenting in the map customizer with road label visibility at different zoom levels, I noticed an odd thing when I change the "visible from zoom level" setting for a Lvl 3 (primary) road. With the "visible" setting higher than the map's display zoom level, the label doesn't show; that's as expected. As I lower the "visible" setting past the map's display zoom level, the label appears, as expected - route number only, which seems odd, but that's actually my preference. When I continue to reduce the "visible" setting, nothing changes... until I reach the lowest level possible (level 9)... at that setting, all the labels in view for that road suddenly change to route number plus road name, with a hyphen between them. Nothing else changes. Any ideas what's happening here?

Quote from Guido on 20.08.2025, 10:14This is as designed. At lower (further away) zoom levels it will only show road number. At a certain level it will add the road name.
I've done this because, indeed in some countries, road numbers are important, but other countries don't really work with the road numbers, but rather the road names. There is no option to show road numbers for one region and road names in other regions, so this is sort of a compromise.

It seems odd: one road behaves as you describe, yet with another road nearby, exactly the opposite occurs: at lower zoom levels, only the road name is shown, until zooming in enough and the road number is then added...
