Just map, no route.

Sometimes, when I know where I'm going, I like to have a map showing so I can see where I am and getting speed camera warnings etc, even though there's no route currently planned and being followed. Can Scenic do this?

I realise it's a fairly basic question, but I have both Scenic 2 and 3 (on different iPhones) and when I tried that in 2, I just had an empty screen with some dots being trailed behind me. So it was tracking my path (which I didn't want) and not showing the actual map (that I did want).

Without taking each iPhone out on the bike and riding around and stopping and fiddling with settings etc, it's quite hard to discover definitive answers to this while just sitting at a desk. So could a Scenic 'expert' help and let me know if Scenic 2 and/or Scenic 3 can do this?

Yes... simply tap 'record ride' and start riding. When you finish the ride, choose 'Discard' and your ride won't be saved.

Scenic 2 worked similarly. It's strange that the maps were not showing though. Did you have the offline maps installed?

Damn you Guido, you spotted the flaw in my setup. 🙁

I've since been looking at the 2 installations and realised that not only was I not even logged in on the iPhone 5S (with Scenic 2), but had not downloaded the maps. Doh! That's the trouble with trying to handle many apps on many devices and get everything set up as desired. Gets worse as you get older unfortunately.

Now (I think) I have everything set up, I'll try again.

Thanks for pointing out my failings. 🙂

Totally recognize that 😃

Hi Guido, I also wanted just a map to be visible whilst riding but no navigation, and I did what you describe. I then double tapped and zoomed out to get a smaller scale map then rode. It did indeed track my journey but went off the map at the edge and the map did not move so all my movement was off screen. If I stopped and manually moved the map then I could see where I had been. So for me the map didn't automatically move with me and show where I was with me in the middle - what am I doing wrong? I am a new user so still getting to grips with it. Love the curvy round trips which work wonderfully for me!

Ok. So, if you double tap the map you go to edit mode. In edit mode you purposefully are able to move the map away from your current location. Edit mode is mostly used to get an overview of where you are along the route (you can also use the ‘overview’ button to get there) and to do some last minute ‘on the fly’ changes to the route while riding it.

Edit mode is not meant for riding though. You’ll have to go back to the navigation mode for that. To do that tap the ‘chevron down’ button bottom right, while you are in edit mode.

In navigation mode there are two zoom options. Auto and Manual. The zoom option is configurable in Settings > Navigation and tracking. Auto automatically zooms in and out based on your speed. Manual adds two zoom buttons on the map (like you see in edit mode) permanently. The zoom you set with those buttons will stay regardless of your speed.

Hope this helps/explains. If not or if you have other questions please let me know. Happy to help.

Best regards and ride safe,

Guido

Thanks Guido, that makes sense, I will eventually get there - in both senses!

I am intrigued by the compatibility with the WunderLINQ unit as I have a 2018 R1200RS which has the old and pretty terrible part analogue LCD dash / screen.

I will look into this as it seems to provide the full new BMW TFT screen layout on the smart phone, as well as wheel control of Scenic, and can do split screen so can see main elements of both.
