Ipad and updates etc
Quote from Maxodo on 25.11.2024, 08:15Hi Guido - apologies as I expect I'm late to the party but not been riding for some time and hence not checked in on the app.
However, my iPad Scenic now greets me with 'A major Scenic update is available' but my iPad does not have ios past 15.something and presumably cannot get any more current.
Therfore Scenic is now unusable on my iPad!
Is this going to be the same on my iPhone (6S Plus) which I always use for nav on the bike as it is big/old/cheap?
If so then I am stuffed and as a lifetime Premium user have no ability to use Scenic any more...

Quote from Guido on 25.11.2024, 09:39I'm afraid so. I wish I could have kept Scenic 3 around for those with older devices, but this was not possible. Here's the story behind all this if you haven't read it already: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-the-whole-story/

Quote from Maxodo on 25.11.2024, 10:02I just read it Guido - I'm fooked now. No Scenic, and no way that I can see of accessing hundreds of routes and history that I spent ages creating over many years. Rather frustrating as a 'lifetime' paid up member.
I know people will say move with the times and buy new, updated iphones and iPads but my 'old' ones work perfectly well thanks very much! And I don't want to use a shiny new iPhone as the nav device on my bike just to get knackered.

Quote from Guido on 25.11.2024, 10:53For what it’s worth… your data will still be there for the moment that either (1) you get a new(er) iPhone/ipad or (2) once Scenic Android is ready. Perhaps picking up a 2nd hand iPhone 8 Plus or higher could be an option. I myself use an older iPhone for navigation.
Under normal circumstances I would have kept older version of Scenic working without the mandatory update, but I couldn’t do that this time and had to make a decision to drop devices older than 9 years.
Side note: This is a very important reason why I don’t offer Scenic Forever anymore. I simply can’t guarantee ‘Forever’ support for everyone and all devices… forever.
I hope you understand.

Quote from Maxodo on 25.11.2024, 11:32Sure but it's very frustrating - even if I want to leave Scenic and copy the routes (manually) to another alternative nav app I cannot as I cannot see the 'data'.
Is there no way to access an older version of Scenic for users happy with older devices? Can't you have this available as a separate download on the app store?

Quote from Guido on 25.11.2024, 11:40Unfortunately not. Because the contract with HERE maps ended, it would be completely useless.

It is. And I reckon that we should boycott HERE.
Anyway, back to the iPhone issue, ebay (at least the Australian version) has plenty of 8+ iPhones listed around the $200 AUD (around #120 USD) mark. I don't know where you are but they'd probably be cheaper if you're in the US, UK or wherever.
Something to consider, given the awesomeness of Scenic.

Quote from Maxodo on 26.11.2024, 02:07I haven't got any choice to boycott or not - as of this update I have absolutely no access to Scenic on any of my devices! 😀
But I know Guido has always done all he can for Scenic and his customers - just a huge shame that there is no way round this.
Planning routes on a phone is fiddly and time consuming - so much easier on an iPad - especially in the absence of any web based (PC) version of Scenic route planner. So - anyone like me who likes and is perfectly happy with perfectly functioning 'older' devices is up the creek without a paddle unless they want to buy a newer phone and tablet.

It was a tongue-in-cheek comment re: the HERE boycott. It has its maps on so many platforms, in car sat navs, Garmin Zumos and so on, so we'd make no difference to its sales.
As for route planning, you're right - doing it on the iPhone is hard. I run a Mac Mini and have Scenic installed on it. Planning a trip on a 33" widescreen monitor makes it SO easy to do.
Another option is to use Google Maps on the desktop or even (and I hate to say it here), the My Route App website has a web planner where you can create routes and export them as GPX files. Then use Scenic's website to import them into your account.
But of course, that's not helping you if you're stuck with the iPhone 6.
