Indicate if a road is closed, re-route option

Sometimes if you ride, the road is closed. So what I do is look in to the map, try to delete the next point, and figure out which way I need to drive, I drive one way, until the app creates a new route to the next point.

Should it be possible to say 'upcoming road is closed', so the app will re-route. Maybe with a option upcoming x (0,5 - 1 - 5) kilometers road is closed. Or 'avoid road' where you can select which road, with the option of the length (x km's)

Thanks in advance.

On iPhone, there is a road block feature. (see screenshot). It's not working optimal at this time, but I'm working on improving it.

On CarPlay, the road block feature is not yet implemented. Mostly because the user interaction is limited. (CarPlay doesn't give any feedback on where you tap on the map, so I have to think of another solution. Perhaps what you are suggesting... "road blocked for next 0.5, 1, 1.5 km etc.

Hi Guido,

a couple of weeks ago I also finally had the possibility to test Scenic not only as a super planning tool, but for direct navigation via CarPlay as well after a long time. I am very happy to be able to finally use one tool for planning and navigation. But due to the App not knowing about road blockings by itself as well as the unavailability of indicating closed roads navigation sometimes got quite frustrating. I figured that there was no ”road blockage” feature included in CarPlay, so I stopped and used the iPhone directly, which works fine for me. But even though I selected “road block/Strassensperre” and “blocking/Sperre” to mark the unavailable road, the road was highlighted green and the routing still used the so marked part. (Due to using the App in German, maybe I got the English menu names wrong).

Also I did not see any distinctive behavior between “Freigabe” and “Sperre”. Maybe it did not work because of that? So twice I spent some time trying to maneuver around the road blockage on my own to letting Scenic taking over afterwards, just so Scenic navigated me to the exact same road block 20-40 minutes later. Having the ability to actively avoid roads would be great.

I am using Scenic a for couple of years now and I am very happy to see the big improvements, specifically since the understandable dip in functionality switching to OSM. Keep pushing!

HI Helge,

Thank you for the detailed report. I'm aware that the road block doesn't always work. It's on my list to look into this and fix it.
It's also on the list to add real time road closure information, but that will take a while longer I'm afraid. Still working on the map customizer (which is just about ready), and then the next item is adding back the speed camera warnigns.

Best regards,
Guido

Meanwhile, what you could try, instead of using the road block feature, is go to edit mode and add or remove a via point. With Scenic 4 you now have full access to the power planner during navigation. To do this:

  • If you are on CarPlay, first switch to another app on CarPlay (e.g. Apple Music). This will make the iPhone take over the navigation session.
  • On iPhone... move the map slightly to go to edit/overview mode
  • Tap the "edit route" button bottom right. This will take you to the power planner
  • Now you can edit the route any way you like, similar to how you would plan a route before navigating.

hope this helps for the moment.

Wow. Super fast and detailed feedback! Thank you!

I had this issue today as well. Road blocked, trying to use the road blocked tool. The color of the road changed to green, besides of that nothing happened, no rerouting to detour the closed part (which was a few km long). The next via was after (!) the blocked part.
Now, after the ride,  when I check the map, the blocked road part is still in green color. What, if I want to unblock this segment, how can I do this? This could also be relevant when I „play“ with this feature during a ride and afterwards I want to unblock it again.
Didn‘t found an option for that.
In the past years, a had to use this feature during every multi-day trip several times, and it helped quite a lot before version 4.

Yep... sorry for the inconvenience.
Unblocking is done by tapping on the same road segment in the "road block" screen. The green lines should disappear after you finish the navigation session. If they are not, that's a bug. I'll also take a look at that when I start working on this.

But the road block screen is only accessible during navigation? Otherwise it says „no active navigation“ when tapping the road block button. And yes, the „green lines“ were still there, after having finished and saved the ride.
however, after writing my above comment I did an update of the loaded maps and now the „green lines“ are gone.
Other question regarding road block: Is the road block valid only for „my“ personal map tile, or will the block show up for every user? If the latter is the case, can anyone else unblock my blocks?

OK. Will check why the green lines are not disappearing. Meanwhile, an app close (swipe up through the app switcher) and then reopen, should do the trick.

The roads you block are only for you, so not shared with others.

What are the timescales for automatic road closures?

I had to revert to google maps yesterday as scenic has no clue about these, every other mapping app has this feature but scenic insisted i went down a road i know has been closed for months.

Free Wase actually tells me why it’s avoided that road.

Im beginning to wonder if Openstreet maps is the right option.

Hi,

I‘m sorry to say that after many years and doing thousands of kilometers with Scenic (premium membership) I recently had to switch over to my TomTom app more and more often. There are so many road blocks that I can hardly ever follow the intended route. It‘s a shame, I really like Scenic. So please, implement closed roads. I don‘t care about traffic situation but ending up in front of a dead end sign again and again is really annoying.

And while you‘re at it, there is a chance for Scenic to do better than everyone else by allowing routing along closed roads by request. I often plan routes months in advance. And all the other apps (like Google Maps) won‘t let me route across high mountain passes (which are of course closed most of the year) if they are currently closed when I‘m planning. That would be great!

Thanks,

Axl from Hamburg

Hi Axl,

I understand, and I'm sorry about this. As you might know, I was forced to migrate Scenic to another map provider last year (more info here if you like: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-the-whole-story/ ). The new map provider does not have real-time road closure information integrated, so I need to get it from a third party.

First, I want to bring speed cameras back (aimed for July). Then I'm going to start working on real time road closures.

Best regards,

Guido

Hi Guido,

thanks for your fast answer. I'm well aware of the difficulties you have been going through. Just thought you should know about the matter, since it has IMHO the potential to drive customers away from small companies like Scenic.

Cheers,

Axl
