In CarPlay Mode which GPS is used?
Quote from Marts on 23.04.2025, 20:22I'm having a discussion with someone over on the Chigee board. I might be misunderstanding what he's saying but it appears that he might be claiming that Carplay apps running on the Chigee unit (it has its own GPS module) might use that for its speed reference and tracking data.
I guess that I should ask, how does Scenic work in this regard? Can it use an external GPS such as the Chigee one or the one in your car or does it solely rely on the phone's GPS?
Thanks.

If you had a Bluetooth gps receiver connected your phone will just use it. Supposedly CarPlay supports passing GPS data but it’s not required, so some cars / units implement it, others doesn’t. As far as I know there is no way to tell on your phone what it’s using.

I own the chigee as well. AIO 5 lite.
The gps is just for the unit. To show the speed you actually drive. Some guys (scooter for e.g.) only install the chigee, nothing else, so they need to see their speed. Otherwise it wouldn‘t be allowed to use just the chigee.

Thanks Mex. Yes, I am aware of what the GPS module does. My question relates to where Scenic gets its GPS data from when in CarPlay mode.
I'm going to test it by turning off the iPhone's Location Services (which should turn off the GPS) then go for a ride and see what Scenic does, if anything.
It's not a big deal. I'm just curious as to how it works after someone on the Chigee board suggested that the AIO-5 Lite passes GPS data through to the Scenic app via CarPlay. At least, that's how I read what he posted.
