Import into Scenic routes from Basecamp - via & stops not correct

When I import a Basecamp-generated GPX file into Scenic I find that the Stops and Vias that are specified in the GPX are not correctly interpreted when imported into Scenic.

In Basecamp some route points are 'shaping points' and shown as 'Won't alert' then others are actual stops that are set as "Alert on arrival". It would be nice if Scenic during import would create Scenic Via points for the 'Won't alert' and stops for the "Alert on arrival".  Currently, it seems that Scenic takes all of the Basecamp route points and makes them all Stops regardless of their designation and then fills in additional Via points to help make the Scenic route match the intended route.

Hi @foxthorn,

I believe this is the same underlying cause that you referred to in the other thread. I need to implement the Garmin trip extension in the import for this to work, which I have not done yet. Import is more work to implement than export, so I’m afraid this will take a little while.

best regards,

Guido

I have found that Scenic will truncate a route at 87 Stop points when importing a route, created in Basecamp, that has more than 87 Via points (shaping points or otherwise).  Further the "route" tends to begin mds-point.  Scenic will not permit the imported route to be "Saved".  The entire route is actually imported as the full "track" can be seen.

Hey Guido,

I would like to continue this post as my topic goes in the same direction. As the direct import from kurviger is now canceled, I have to do the import with the gpx file. There I also realise that scenic creates only stop points as the user "not lost on me" already mentioned. First I struggled a little bit in kurviger to do the correct setup for the export but as you can see, these two points are correctly exported.  So, if you ever have time for this topic, please remind also the scenic import as well. It is interesting, that even the well defined gpx format has a lot of not defined topics, so that every programmers uses it own "language", Basecamp uses "wont alert" and "Alert on arrival" and kurviger uses "shaping" and "via".

Greetings Frank

Hi Frank,

Yes... this is an important topic for many users, so it's also important for me. At the moment, I'm working on a redesign for the fall of this year. I hope to have time to improve the import for GPX's from the most important sources (basecamp, Kurviger) in that update. If not, it will be added very soon after the big redesign is out.

Best,

Guido
