How do I get rid on the multiple thin route lines?

Tap the 3rd button from the top on the left. You probably activated some of your ride folders to show on the map.

Yep, that did it. Thank you.

It looks like I need to clear those settings for each ride as they seem to default to on. Is that correct?

The rows you see in the 'Show on map' panel correspond to folders in your 'recorded rides'. Activating those folders will show all rides in that folder on the map.
