How are "Breaks" calculated?

Please see https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZ4Ru4VZcoEpbwOhOQBRcaAs8bSFqbOEL247

If am recording a ride what is the recommended approach to get breaks (stops along the way) to show up on that screen above? Should I not "Pause" the recording? What are the pros/cons of pausing the recording vs not?  I don't want to run the risk of after pausing a ride, I forget to unpause/resume and lose all the subsequent trip info from being logged the app.  Any suggestions?

Breaks are interesting because they tell you how much of the total time was break vs actual riding. And the avg speed is calculated based on riding time (not total time).

By default Scenic auto-pauses after 90 seconds of not moving (if I remember correctly). By default Scenic auto-resumes if you get further than 75 meters away from the location where it paused (could be 50 meters, don’t remember exactly)

In some circumstances this does not work. If  you go inside the GPS signal becomes inaccurate and can ‘Jump around’ making Scenic think you are still moving or started moving again (yes the jumps can be > 75 meters), while you are having lunch inside.

You can turn off auto-pause in settings > navigation & tracking.

You can turn off auto resume by tapping the ETA bar and going to tracking stats. When the tracking is paused there is an auto-resume switch!

What I recommend and what I do myself is to leave both ON. This works great for shorter stops like a long traffic light and gasoline stops.

Only for longer stops, like a restaurant break, I manually turn on pause and choose to turn off the GPS (it will ask). That saves battery and prevents the ‘jumping around’ problem polluting your track. Note that you will have to resume manually when you do that.

One more thing… if you use Scenic in the background (iPhone locked and in pocket only going by voice instructions), auto-resume does not work unless Scenic has ‘always’ location access. If not, iOS will shut down the GPS automatically after a few minutes of not moving, and scenic won’t known when you get more than 75 meters away from the pause location. This is the ‘straight line’ in track recording problem: https://scenic.app/help/not-tracking-entire-ride-pause-resume-tracking/

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️
