Highway abbreviations off for “CH” (county hwy)
Quote from jth on 29.08.2025, 13:14When traveling with directions, a lot of roads near me are abbreviated. SH and CH. Scenic usually reads out the SH as State Highway or highway but CH ends up getting read out as chapter rather than “county highway” or “county road” or simply (my preference) “county.”
I think it would be nice if we could choose for these — “I-280” or “interstate 280”, “highway 36” or “state highway 36”, “US 10” or “US highway 10”, etc.

These are separate from the written direction you see on screen (so that the text-to-voice engine can “speak” them) At the moment they don’t have a configuration option on how street names/numbers/categories are pronounced.

My phone was operating in English and using the Daniel Enhanced English United Kingdom voice.
The roads in the area where I was (Cantabria) all start “CA-“ followed by a number. This was being spoken as “California xxx”, where xxx is the number.
There were other similar errors in other areas, but I can’t remember which they were. They all seemed to be where the 2 letters in the number corresponded to a US state abbreviation.

Quote from TigerOnTour on 23.10.2025, 01:52Missing context in the spoken language is common in many places. My setting is similar (phone and app in English) and I’m travelling most of the time in German or French speaking areas (sometimes Italian) - where places like Gd St Bernard for Grand Saint Bernard are in the directions spoken as “Great Street Bernhard” or a small town in my area Chatel St Denis as Chatel Street Dennis instead of Saint.
Would be great to have a language option like “street and place names in local language” - but as long as the provider does not support it …
