Guido - where has the Indian English voice gone?

Please will he come back?!  😀

Sorry 🙃. Theybare not coming back. The new map provider uses its own voices which are different front the previous voices that scenic used.

Oh.

Guido - I have not downloaded any voices on the iPad for the new Scenic 3 and it appears to give me the Indian voice automatically but this is I guess generated by iOS as I have Indian English as my Siri voice.

I am not Indian by the way just it's a quirky thing I have set on my phone...!

There is a difference with turn-by-turn sentences coming from the map framework like “in 300 feet turn right” and voice sentences I’ve added additionally (like “reached stop x”, and “route recalculation”. They indeed are based on your language and installed voices in iOS settings.

This is an odd one Guido - I have the latest Scenic on my 6S and 6S Plus (I use the Plus for nav as larger) but the 6S is on iOS 14.8.1 and the Plus 14.5.1 (I cannot scavenge enough space to update further as it's a cheap/sacrificial phone just for nav).  Both have Siri as 'Indian (voice 2)' and both have no Scenic voices installed (the English US street names is ticked only on both).

Yet there are changes.  If I start a nav on each then the 6S kicks off with Indian voice and the Plus with a US female voice??

Also on the 6S the volume goes to 130% but only 100% on the Plus?

Interesting indeed. There are two problems here.

First... the 130%... that's a display bug. I will correct this for next update.

Then, the different voices... it's not device related, but it's related to what text is being spoken. During navigation the guidance texts (e.g. "In 300 ft turn left") is spoken by the voice of the framework (the voice you select in Scenic settings). However I added some additional texts, like "Detour Detected", "Route Recalculation", "Re-joined Route", "Reached Stop X". These are spoken by the voice you set in iOS (in your case, the Indian voice). Unfortunately the framework doesn't allow me to play those texts through their voice (and even if they would allow it, it would only work if you selected a non-prerecorded voice).

Thanks Guido, I get that but this is the exact same saved route on both phones started at the same time (in front of me now).  They both say the same thing as soon as I hit 'start navigation' ie: "After a quarter of a mile turn right onto....".  But the 6S in Indian English and the Plus in female US English.

OK. That is a bit weird. I can only make an educated guess as to why this happens...
Some of the voices you select in Scenic - the synthesized TTS (computer) voices -  of which the default US is one - are actually links to iOS voices. When you select such a voice, the framework looks at the voices you have installed on the device for that language, and picks one.

I don't have any control, nor any insight in the logic behind that 'voice picking'. So I don't know why it picks one voice over the other if you have multiple voices installed for that language. I have already contacted the provider about this, but they haven't given me any conclusive answer to this. Otherwise I could use the same logic to select the same iOS voice to play "my" texts.

So, my guess is that, on one device you have another voice installed under iOS settings as well, and on the other device maybe the Indian voice is the only one for English language?

Thanks Guido - I have checked in Accessibility/spoken content/voices and both devices look the same set up with exactly the same range of voices checked.

Really odd.

Different iOS versions can come with different pre-installed voices (I don't know if there's a difference between 14.x and 14.y). You can not remove pre-installed voices. Only voices that you need to download can be removed. If you want to see if you downloaded a voice, I believe the only way is to go through all of them and check if they have the 'edit' button top right. If they do, you can remove them.

Example (iOS 15.1):
I downloaded English (Australian) Lee, and I can remove it by tapping the 'Edit' button:

English (US) Fred came pre-installed. I can not remove it. There is no Edit button top right.

Guido, I’m out today testing Scenic again but whatever I do I cannot get any voice. Sound effects no problem, I’ve tried ticking Announced street names and have downloaded US English but nothing. It’s not a connection issue.  Siri working fine as is Google maps voice

Have you accidentally muted the voice through the navigation menu (big button menu) perhaps? (This setting is remembered between rides)

Ok 🙂. Happy that was it

You are a superstar.

BTW what actually changes if you have US English ticked compared to Announced street names?

There are 3 English (US) voices in Scenic:

The first one “announced street names” speaks street names, it’s a TTS voice, and  is linked to one of the voices you have installed for the English (US) language in Acdessibility > voice prompts settings.  Again, not sure what logic is used to pick the a voice if you have multiple voice installed for that language.

the other two are pre-recorded. They are sound files. They don’t speak street names. They are a bit louder though. I like the male voice. For me it’s the best understandable in my helmet. But that’s personal.

Thank you, so do they give the same amount of instructions and always at the same times?  Just one will say 'after 1/4 mile turn right into 'London Road' and the other 'after 1/4 mile turn right'.

Also can you delete downloaded (scenic) voices?  I made the mistake of downloading the 'surfer dude'... 😉

EDIT - I found it - swipe left.

Correct. They give the same amount of instructions.

You can delete downloaded voices by swiping left on then. The English US announced street names is the default and can not be removed.

Voice packages don’t take up too much space. Only around 2 MB mostly.

Just checking Guido - if I have English UK - annonced street names that means I do NOT get the ''re-joined route' etc and similar announcements?

I removed these additional texts from the latest version. Their added value was limited and they interfered with the turn instructions on some occasions.

Ok, got it.
