GPS reception with trees and rain
Quote from Lehmanhill on 13.10.2024, 17:27We will give Guido the night off on this one. I'm looking for user input on GPS reception when it has rained in the last 24 hours and you are riding with trees all around. I suspect my old iPhone may be having trouble with it's GPS chip or antenna because I remember having no reception issues a couple of years ago. In the current case I get the "Bad GPS recepti0n" warning a lot, maybe 40% of the time in Appalachian hills with wet tree leaves above. On my recent trip, there were times when it was continuously not working for 5 to 10 miles and that affects navigation. Happily, I was following a guy with a BMW Nav 6 who had good signal all the way. Please share your experience as I need to decide how to fix this.
Of course, replacing the phone is possible but expensive. I note the existence of external gps devices for iPhone. Does anyone have experience with those? Worth trying or just replace the phone? Thanks in advance.

Quote from Lehmanhill on 14.10.2024, 08:11Not to make this a one person conversation, but I did some looking at external gps devices. I would love to own a Bad Elf as much because of the name as anything, but their current cheapest model is 500 USD, too much for me.
The only other options appear to be the Garmin GLO 2 ($90 - $120) and a couple of units from Dual Electronics. The Dual units have positive overall ratings but have some persistent bad durability reviews. The Garmin has some of those but appears to be better received. That said, the classic Garmin poor customer support remains and the Garmin isn't ever water resistant. At 100 USD, the cost of an external gps is about the same as a used iPhone SE (2nd).
The other approach would be to find a used Bad Elf GPS Pro or Pro+. Given that Bad Elf seems to support their legacy products and Garmin and Dual aren't great at their new products, used may be an option.
Does anyone have any experience with these bluetooth external gps?
Thanks

I've had a Garmin GLO 2 for a few years with no problem at all. It works fine as is with Apple devices, a little trickier with Android I believe because you need additional software. I know that they are also used in light aircraft aviation with iPads, so well proven.
It pairs via BT and gives way more accurate and faster GPS position updating. Picks up GPS and GLONASS satellites. My understanding is that it augments the GPS receiver in your iOS device rather than replaces it.
