Because most people have the iPhone in their pocket or tank bag when connected to CarPlay I made it the default to lock the phone automatically after a while (saves battery).
There is a new setting to prevent auto-lock though. This will give you the behavior you were used to. It’s the last setting under Finetuning.

What Karlchen was referring to is that the screen is actually locking after x minutes (the time you set in iOS settings), so if you want to use iPhone you'll have to unlock with Face ID or enter your passcode.
