Feedback after 4,500 mile road-trip

Hi Guido. I just finished a 10 day 4,500 mile ride using Scenic to navigate my trip (I keep my phone in my tank bag and only listen to the verbal directions). Scenic continues to be the best navigation app and it worked flawlessly (except for one time partially caused by user error). That being said, I do have the following thoughts/requests that I would like to share with you:

1) While I know that it is possible to zoom in to see the location of gas stations when planning a trip, it would be very helpful if it were somehow easier to identify gas stations along the route without having to zoom in so much. When planning fuel stops, I found myself having to use Google to find the gas stations, and then I would search for that gas station in Scenic to add it as a Stop. It would be much better to be able to easily identify the gas stations in Scenic.

2) For those of us only listening to the verbal directions without seeing the screen, it would be helpful for there to be some warning that a Stop is coming up. As mentioned above, I use Stops to mark my gas stops, and I find that Scenic tells me I’ve reached the stop just as I’m passing the station. A 500 or 1000 foot warning would be helpful.

3) It would be helpful to be able to Pause navigation during longer stops (such as during lunch). I found myself having to silent the voice commands and then try to remember to turn them back on after my lunch stops.

4) After a longer gas stop where I had to put on rain gear, I forgot to hit the resume button, and so my trip navigation did not restart. It would be helpful if navigation could automatically restart once you start moving again (perhaps it could auto restart once you reach 10 or 20 MPH).

5) This is minor nit, but I would like to have an easier way to add and edit notes to a Route. I know this can be done through a review, but it is not possible to edit the reviews, and I’d prefer to be able to give a Route a star rating without having to rate each of the categories.

Again, Scenic is an amazing app, and I’m honestly not sure what I would do without it. I also greatly appreciate that you have continued to improve the app over the years.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Happy you liked Scenic during your trip, and thanks for the suggestions. Here are some reactions.

Best regards,
Guido

Yes...these built in POI icons are tiny. I've tried to find a way to make them bigger, but it's not possible with the current map framework. I'm migrating Scenic to the new map framework during fall/winter and will see if they have more options. Meanwhile, what you could try is use the search function during planning. You can also search the "fuel" category nearby. The 'nearby' search returns results within a 10km radius op the map center (where the crosshair is). You'll get a list by default, but there's a 'map' button top left which shows them on the map.
You can also search for fuel while navigating (of course after stopping along the side of the road 🙂... double tap the map while navigating. This will take you to edit mode, where you will also find a search function.

2) For those of us only listening to the verbal directions without seeing the screen, it would be helpful for there to be some warning that a Stop is coming up. Currently the warning is set at 50 meters (165 feet). I'll change this to 150 meter (500 feet) for the next update (not v3.14 which is already awaiting apple approval now, but v3.15). Let's see how that feels. You can see version number at bottom of the settings tab.

3) It would be helpful to be able to Pause navigation during longer stops (such as during lunch). I found myself having to silent the voice commands and then try to remember to turn them back on after my lunch stops.

That's possible. Tap the bottom bar (where you see time and distance) and then tap the 'pause' button.

4) After a longer gas stop where I had to put on rain gear, I forgot to hit the resume button, and so my trip navigation did not restart. It would be helpful if navigation could automatically restart once you start moving again (perhaps it could auto restart once you reach 10 or 20 MPH).

That does work, but since you use Scenic when the iPhone is locked, Scenic needs 'Always' location access to 'wake up' after a longer stop. See here for more info: https://scenic.app/help/not-tracking-entire-ride-pause-resume-tracking/

OK. I understand. Indeed filling out a rating is a bit cumbersome. Will add this to the list.
Next to reviews routes also have a description. If it's your own route you can change this as well. Simply select the route from your list and then tap on the route title at the top.

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Thanks for the detailed reply Guido! That is all very helpful information!
