Favorite Locations vs. POI groups
Quote from jmossfeld on 20.12.2024, 13:39Any advice on when to use a favorite location folder vs. a POI group? I have a “Coffee and Bakeries” folder that I use for route planning, but how would that be different from creating a POI group that contains the same locations?

Quote from Ernst on 20.12.2024, 19:35My coffee list is a locations folder. Locations can contain text in addition to the title. I save the URL of the cafe in it. I sometimes need this to check the opening times when I'm out.
@Guido: you could simplify that: a dedicated URL field with a link to Safari.

Quote from Guido on 21.12.2024, 04:13Basically, a POI Group is meant for big collections of specific points. Typically you import a POI group or copy paste the lat, lon, name in the data field. For example, 'Campspots in France' could be a POI group or 'Cameras in Austria'. It more cumbersome to add a new location to a POI group than it is for a Location folder. Markers in a POI Group are 'grouped' on higher zoom levels, while markers in a Locations folder are never grouped.
Hope that helps a bit.

Quote from pe112 on 21.12.2024, 06:48There are some more differences that have not been mentioned so far:
- Markers from POI groups are displayed as flat icons while markers from Favorites are displayed as (optically more noticeable) pins. Whatever suits you better.
- Markers from POI groups have their name displayed on the map while markers from Favorites do not.
- The Favorites are searched by the Search function while POI groups are currently not.
(I believe to have read that searching in POI groups is on the Scenic feature request list.)For the reasons above I have loaded e.g. mountain passes in the Alps both as a POI group and as Favorites.
The POI groups are there for a less intrusive (my 2 cents) and more useful map display (with names).
The Favorites however are there only for quicker access via Search when planning a route. So how you store your Locations would largely depend on what you are planning to use them for and how.
I am sharing the hope that one day, when Guido and Scenic have returned into calmer waters, searching in POI groups will become possible.
Best regards, Martin

My favorits are hotels, diners, pretty roads or adresses of my buddies, marked purple.
As an example in blue i added all summits like Col de la Bonette in France.
While planning a trip i can route easier along the finest roads or plan a stop at a known diner.
Here, as an example, trip in september.

Quote from jmossfeld on 25.01.2025, 09:39@guidomm I imported a GPX file for an organized ride that was designed in RideWithGPS. The waypoints include (I see in the XML file) <name>, <cmt>, <desc> I imported the waypoints as locations in Scenic and the descriptions (either from <cmt> or <desc>) were stored with the locations along with the name from <name>. In map view, when I click on a location, I see the name, but not the description.
Requests:
- Show the description when the location icon is touched.
- If the description contains a URL (or if there is a separate URL field, as suggested above), allow the URL to be clicked to open the default browser.
Thanks for your consideration.
