Fastest way is not fastest
Quote from as rider on 08.02.2025, 08:55Hi Guido
I know, that all ways lead to Rome and routing is therefore a difficult thing. Living in Zurich I can say, that scenic's routing for the fastest route is often not the fastest. I compare scenic's new maps with scenic's previous maps or Garmin's maps, where the routing is / was ways better.
How can you explain this difference? Is there a solution planed?

According to Scenic, the route going down below is faster (see screenshots). Having said that, and although I’m not familiar in the area, I trust when you say that in reality this is not the case.
Scenic calculates duration based on known speed limits, if these are unknown than road classification with some default speed per road class, sometimes, some historical traffic data if known and some correction factors for traveling through urban, suburban and rural areas.
I am currently in the process with Scenic’s map provider to revise this approach, but that will take a while.
Hope this explains.
Best regards,
Guido

Quote from as rider on 14.02.2025, 07:30Thank you, Guido, for your explanation. The process of calculating a route seems comprehnsible to me. As you saw, at Point 1 the highway starts. Maybe in times with a lot of traffic in rushhours resulting in traffic jams, the scenic proposition could eventually be faster.
It seems to be a good idea for me to check all the factors leading to the routing.
Best regards
Alexander

Quote from Guido on 14.02.2025, 08:41This point is strongly related to the overestimation of travel time for a route (in some areas). I discussed this with the map provider 2 days ago. They are working on improving the estimates, which should also improve the “fastest route” choice. With a bit of luck the improvement will be in the march map update.
