Exporting Google my maps to Scenic

Hello everyone. I am using scenic for years and I can say its a great app for motorcycle navigation. But now I bit confused. Trying to export google my maps route - containing few route layers. First of all - I cant see any stops - all points are "via", next thing - is it possible some how to merge routes from different layers to one single track?

Thanks in advance

You are doing better than me. I have tried before to export Google My Map files which are in KMZ or KML format and neither type import into Scenic for me. I have created a route in just Google maps web page and copied the hyperlink into the Scenic Web App. That works quite well.

Have you successfully imported a route into Scenic ? If you have you can edit the 'via' points into 'Stops' On the edit page tap on the 'More' menu item, and select 'Convert all vias to stops'.

Yes, I did. I just downloaded KMZ file and added one into Scenic. And it works fine except one thing - all stops are lost. Unfortunately - manual conversion is not an option as far as route is a bit complex and contains hundreds of bias and many stops.

OK just tried again making sure the downloaded file is a KMZ. On import to Scenic I get the following error message.

Actually am OK with both KML&KMZ. As well as with the direct link. But I am doing this from the PC.

The worst thing it was not like this before. I am absolutely sure - it was a visibility of waypoints some time ago.

Hi Peter,

KMZ, KML, GDB and ITN files can only be imported through the Scenic WebApp. The iOS app can only import GPX.

Cheers,
Guido

Have you tried copy/pasting the Google My Maps URL in the WebApp? It can handle Google Maps links, but also Google My Map links. https://scenicapp.space/webapp.php

Could you share the My Maps URL here perhaps? Or, if you're not comfortable doing that, email it to me? (There's an 'email me' button all the way at the bottom of the support page.

Brilliant. The Google My Maps route KMZ file does indeed work via the Scenic Web App.

Thanks Guido.

Hello Guido, NP, here it is: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1GTJA6uw4DUcEj-udi1ZjMGrceHLzaoso&usp=sharing

Well. I investigated it, but I can't see anything wrong on Scenic side.

A little bit of background to explain:
- If you paste this link in the WebApp, in essence, the webApp requests the KML file from Google My Maps
(so you exporting to KML / KMZ and then importing those file through the WebApp, is basically the same)
- Once received this KML file is converted to a GPX file by the WebApp. This is done by a 3rd party library which I did not change nor update for a very long time.
- When you then go to the import queue in Scenic on your iPhone, you see only tracks in the GPX and not routes. (Scenic needs routes to identify stops, as a track is just a list of coordinates without stop info).
- I then downloaded the KML directly and looked at it through a text editor. I only see two "LineString" elements in there, and those are converted to a track.

So, if anything changed, I'm almost positive it's not on Scenic side. Perhaps Google My Maps changed how they generate the KML files??? I honestly don't know... Google My Maps import is not a highly used feature in Scenic, so I've not received other feedback on this for some time.

Sorry I can't be of more help in this.

Thanks a lot for you time! Ok the problem is google - now its clear for me. But I am a bit confused of why people don't use Google my maps. For me its default route plain app for the years. May I ask you for the advice - what is the better alternative for Google My Maps? What route planning solution is better for using?

I don’t know why people don’t use Google My Maps, I can only answer for myself. I think it’s not so straight forward / easy to use.

For route planning, I can recommend three options:

For simple routes: Google Maps

For more complicated route with more stops: Kurviger (they also have some new features to name the stops and choose different routing modes between the stops… which are all supported by Scenic too)

For long multi day trip planning: Furkot. Furkot is very powerfull and has a lot of options for planning routes, but also reserving hotels en restaurants along the way.

all these three integrate with Scenic one way or another. Here’s more info on that: https://scenic.app/knowledge-base/ways-sources-to-import/
