Export without Garmin Extensions?
Quote from sdk on 12.01.2026, 10:07Hi Guido,
I recently got asked why I always send "weird" GPX files and which of the three routes to select. After some confusion on my side, I learned that most apps show 3 routes when importing a GPX from scenic. Is this intended? I assume "plain GPX" is the correct version and the other two are special routes only Garmin devices understand?
Do you think it would be possible to provide an option to export GPX files for non-Garmin devices without these extra routes? Or do you consider this a bug in the receiving application(s)?
Apps that I tested and that show 3 routes when importing a GPX from Scenic (Apple) or the scenic.app web share:
- Organic Maps
- Guru Maps
- Epic Ride Weather
- Kurviger
- DMD
- Scenic 🙂
So basically (almost) all apps? Maybe that's just how it is...
One exception is MyRouteApp (MRA), which directly selects the Plain GPX Version and doesn't show any other.
I noticed that GPX files exported with the Android Version of Scenic do not include these extra routes.
I'm not sure what's right and what is wrong, but I would like to share GPX files that contain only one route.
Or to be precise: One route and one track.Best Regards,
Stefan

Yes. It's already on the list
Or do you consider this a bug in the receiving application(s)?
Also yes 🙂. The official GPX documentation states that a GPX file can contain unlimited routes, tracks and waypoints (well... it doesn't state this explicitly, but there is no limit mentioned, and since GPX is an XML file, there is no limit). Scenic deals with this by displaying those in a list and then you can choose which to import, the other apps you mentioned do something similar I assume. But, indeed I have received feedback about some apps and services that don't do this... they simply take the first route and import that automatically.
I noticed that GPX files exported with the Android Version of Scenic do not include these extra routes.
Yep...Android is still in Open Beta and is missing some features. This is one of them.

Also yes
. The official GPX documentation states that a GPX file can contain unlimited routes, tracks and waypoints
This is very true. I use this feature myself by putting multiple routes + tracks into one file, so I can have one day in one file. The difference is, these are real routes and real tracks, and not meta-routes that are not useful on their own.
The "RoutePoint Extension" for example seems to contain only a few points (well, the name suggests this already) and it's not something that can be routed along. Two of the apps crash when I try load this "Route".
I'm not sure what's in the "Trip Extension". Visually, it looks like the same route as the plain GPX one, but somehow it's longer... (more kilometers in total).
Anyway, don't spend much time explaining me the details. I'm pleased with the answer that an export without Garmin Extra Routes is somewhere on the list.
Oh, and thanks for bringing Scenic to Android! That's where all the rugged and waterproof tablets are. And I'm getting used to the extended capabilities over car play...
