Export GPS Files from Scenic 4 wireless and with SD to Garmin XT2
Quote from converted on 02.01.2025, 10:44Hi Everybody,
I'm currently running into an issue concerning the usage of GPX files with my Garmin XT2.
My process looks like this in the past (with sometimes good results). Generating a route in Scenic on my iPad/iPhone and then send the files via the Tread APP to my Garmin. What I get is a route (no VIA Points) and the stops. Generally I would say that works until you come to the point that you ave to recalculate during the ride. That would mean that the next target will be the next stop. If you don't have one it will lead you to the end point :-(. The alternative I have figured out is to export the Scenic route to the Garmin SD Card. In that way you get all the VIA points, but you loose the stops :-(. Is there no way to get both information in one file, like others can do with the GPX 1.1?
Any information is appreciated.

Quote from Guido on 02.01.2025, 13:41At the moment, Scenic exports a few elements into the GPX file.
Waypoints
It will include a waypoint for all the stops (including start and destination) in the route
Track
The track of the route. This is a list of hundreds or even thousands of coordinates, which, when inter-connected with a straight line, make up the "path" you should follow
Routes
Scenic includes 3 versions of the route. A route contains only key points along the route (the stops and the via points).
I recently received an email from a user struggling with this as well. Here is what he came back with:
After the GPX fill is sent to the XT2 via the Garmin Tread app, a note will appear on the XT2 stating that (6) items have been imported into Garmin Explore on the zumo XT2 (see photographs below)1. Route End (can be deleted)2. Route Start (can be deleted)3. Name of route with the following in parentheses (Garmin RoutePoint Extension) I don’t use this one as it simply displays a magenta line along a route that Garmin feels is the most efficient way to get from Start to End, NOT the route I built in Scenic.
Additional note... if you have stops in the route, these will also be included4. Name of route with the following in parentheses (Garmin Trip Extension) it displays a magenta line with all shaping points as colored dots (blue). It works fine with all shaping points (blue dots) not announced.5. Name of route with the following in parentheses (plain GPX) it displays a magenta line with all shaping points as colored flags (orange). It works fine with all shaping points (orange flags) announced.6. Name of track with following in parentheses (Track) yellow line with no shaping points displayed. I’ve read where it’s a good idea NOT to delete the track file as it can be displayed/used to find your way back onto a route should you get off the route/lost/disoriented. Haven’t tried this, but it makes sense to me.Imported items 1 through 4 described above...Imported items 3 through 6 described above...Route with (Garmin RoutePoint Extension) magenta line described above…Route with (Garmin Trip Extension) magenta line with blue dots described above…Route with (plain GPX) magenta line with orange flags described above…Track with (Track) yellow line with no dots/flags displayed, as should be the case being a track, described aboveHaving said all this... it's still on my list to make some improvements to this, where via points will become blue dots and stops will become flags in the Garmin.

Quote from converted on 03.01.2025, 05:15Hi Guido,
thank you very much for your very quick reply again! I have to admit that I haven't converted any routes to my XT2 since Scenic 4, because of the winter in Germany. For this reason, I was very surprised that only one route and 4 tracks were transferred to my Tread. In the past, I always got 3 routes and one track. Today I tried it again and got the same result as the other user. The version ...Garmin Trip Extension... works best for me.
Taking this into account, I don't see any need (from my point of view) to further optimize the GPX files, because you have the choice!
Thank you very much for all the work you put into the product to constantly make it better.

I just made an other test and had again the same result from yesterday. I received only one Route and three tracks by exporting from Scenig to the Tread app. It looks like something’s going wrong by writing the files. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen all the time, which will make it more difficult to detect.
Attached please find a screen shot after the import. Footprints 👣 are the tracks (obviously) 🙄

Quote from Guido on 03.01.2025, 08:17It could be a bug in Scenic, but it could also be a Tread app bug (saying that it’s a track while it’s actually a route in the GPX).
Could you send me the GPX file corresponding to your screenshot above (with the 3 tracks in stead of 3 routes)?

The GPX file looks good when viewing in a text editor. It contains 3 routes and 1 track. (see screenshot, the <rte> elements are routes, the <trk> elements is a track)I then tried to import into the Garmin Tread app, but got the same result as you did (see screenshot). So, somehow the Tread app interprets these GPX routes as tracks. I’m not sure why.I am planning some changes to the GPX export, that might help with this, but it will be a little while before I have time for that. More info on that in this forum thread: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/route-export-to-garmin-zumo-xt/Sorry I can’t be of any immediate help on this.Best regards,Guido

thank you very much for your feedback. I'm glad you experienced the same result, to have a common base. I'm looking forward to the updates on the GPX files, but can definitely understand that you prioritize the basic functionality of Scenic over the GPX updates.
Thanks a lot for your work!

Quote from Karlchen on 05.01.2025, 11:30Hallo zusammen,

Quote from Roscoe Pound on 12.03.2025, 19:17I have encountered the same problem when importing Scenic gpx routes into Tread. Sometimes they import as routes but sometimes they import as tracks. I did some digging around and learned that the Tread app automatically imports gpx as a track whenever it exceeds Tread's 62 points limit. It's not a problem with Scenic -- the Tread app just has a limit. I broke up the Scenic route into chunks less than 62 points each and was able to import them all into Tread as routes.
