Estimated travel time
Quote from oldgeezer on 10.05.2024, 20:03Guido,
When I first began using Scenic about 18 months ago, I found the estimated travel times to be quite conservative relative to those in Google Maps. Recently, I’ve observed the reverse. Scenic’s estimated travel times are now very aggressive; one would have to exceed the posted highway speed limits by 5-10%, to achieve the estimated time.
Do you know of anything to account for this?
Thanks,
Jeff

I didn’t change anything regarding this. It’s possible that a newer version of the map framework / routing engine, and/or a map version update caused this. I have not had other feedback on this yet though.
In any case, I’m afraid I can’t change nor configure this. The duration is determined by the map data and the routing engine provided by Scnic’s map provider.
Hope this explains. If not, please let me know if you have other questions. Happy to help.
Best regards and ride safe,
Guido

I’ve encountered another interesting behavior related to estimated trip distance and time.
If the entirety of a trip takes place on offline maps, the estimated distance and time displayed with the route thumbnail differs from the estimated distance and time displayed on the edit points screen; the latter time/distance estimate is typically longer. If some portion of the route is in an area that has not been downloaded, the two distance/time estimates are the same.
Do you have any thoughts as to what would explain this behavior?
Cheers,
Jeff

A bit of background first:
- Scenic always tries to use offline route calculation first. If it can't (because offline maps are not installed for all the regions in the route), then it will fall back to online calculation.
- There can be slight differences (including duration and distance) between the online and offline route calculation.
The time/distance you see with the thumbnail, is the one that is calculated when you save the trip. If you choose "edit points", you go to the power planner, and there the route is calculated again.
Knowing this, Is it possible when you saved the routes you did not have the offline maps installed? And now you do?
Cheers,
Guido

That is essentially what happened. While my iPhone has offline maps for all of the areas I’m likely to visit, my iPad (which I generally use for route creation) has a reduced set of offline maps to conserve local storage. I recently created some new routes on the iPad that traversed areas for which my iPad did not have offline maps. Once I downloaded maps for the affected areas and made a trivial change to one of the new routes, the thumbnail and “edit points” distance/time estimates matched.
Thanks for the explanation.

Jeff
