Editing on Mac

I have a new Macbook Pro M4 and I'm using the app there to create/edit routes. I'm getting some strange behavior and I'm not sure if it is something with the computer or the app.

When I first open Scenic, I can zoom in and out by holding down the Command button and then use two fingers forward and backward on the trackpad for the zooming. Works great. If I go into Planning mode to start a new route, it seems to work fine. But if I open an existing route, this functionality seems to go away and I can only double-click to zoom in and hold the Option button and double-click to zoom out. Kinda painful. Is this controlled by the app? I've closed the app and reopened and I've rebooted the machine and start the app again, all to get the same behaviors.

That might be a bug in Scenic. I’ll look into it.

Thanks.

I just ran into another odd thing. Scenic keeps crashing and giving me the "scenic quit unexpectedly" box when I am editing a route. This has happed at least 4-5 times today and I can't find anything specific that causes it to do that. Feels somewhat random. I'm using Scenic 4.06 and this is a brand new MBP with not a lot of stuff loaded on it. Only a couple of apps open when I'm using Scenic. I have rebooted and it still happens.

@guidomm - would the report that Apple creates be of any help? These things that happen randomly are never fun to figure out. ☹️

Yes. The reports help. Does it happen when you switch spaces? If so, that will be resolved in upcoming v4.07

It just occurred to me that the “scenic quit unexpectedly” message only appears when scenic crashes during a ride/navigation session. Are you trying to navigate with your MacBook?

I'm just editing an existing route through the normal means. I am using spaces and have Scenic maximized in its own space but I just played with it a little bit switching between spaces and switching focus to another app and back to the Scenic space and no crash. I was doing a bit of back and forth between spaces today but no more than I have recently with no crashes. Odd.

I'll send you the log so you can take a look. Maybe it is the switching and it's only in specific circumstances. Gremlins. Ghost in the machine.

Log sent.

I was just playing with it again to see if I could make it crash and what might do it (can't replicate yet) but I noticed that now the editing of a route lets me zoom in and out with the Command button and two fingers. It's almost like there is Jeckle and Hyde thing going on. Something I'm doing is "flipping a switch" and it starts acting up. Somehow things get "switched" back and it works again with no issues. I'll keep testing to see if I can determine anything that might cause it to start acting weird.

Hi @stresspuppy, do you still have this problem with v4.07? (It's being rolled over 7 day period starting last friday). If you don't have it yet, you can manually update through the Mac App Store.

Hi @guidomm. I hope you were able to enjoy your trip last week and get some well deserved time away!

I did get 4.07 and in the little bit I have done, it hasn't crashed. I have it maximized in its own space and I'm switching spaces a lot with no issues. I'll keep playing with it and let you know if anything happens.

Zooming with Command+two fingers on trackpad:  I am able to do it on the main map, when you are in planning a route mode, and when you open an existing route and start to edit. But if you open an existing route just to view it, then click on it so it brings you to the full screen of that route, you can't zoom in/out with this method. You can use double click and option-double click as well and pinch/expand with two fingers to zoom in and out, but the Command-two fingers doesn't work. I'm not sure if this is by design, but passing it along just in case.

While testing I noticed something odd about how it is handling pinch/expand with two fingers on the trackpad. If I center the crosshairs on something like Washington DC and pinch or expand, the map moves all over the place and I end up zoomed into the middle of the Atlantic or somewhere way out west. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it as if I zoom back out, I don't end up where I started, mostly just further away. Now, if I put the mouse cursor inside the crosshairs, it seems to work perfectly in and out. It seems something between the crosshairs and the mouse cursor might be confusing which spot it is supposed to be zooming on.

Let me know if you need more details.

I was able to fix the pinch zoom. In the upcoming version it won't move the map at the same time anymore.

Getting the command-tw0-finger drag working in the full screen route view requires a bit more analysis. I'll look into that later.

Thanks! Always amazed at how quickly you get stuff taken care of.

No worries on the full screen route view. I'm not in that very often. I just wanted to let you know.

I saw that you posted an update. I'll get that today and play with it a bit. Some great stuff you are resolving and things you are able to get back in.

@guidomm - I have a new issue. On my Mac I use the app in full screen mode, which gives it its own space, and then just leave it there so I can quickly check a trip as I'm planning things. If I leave it in this mode for a period of time while I am working in other apps, Scenic freezes and I have to close the app and reopen it. When it is like this I can still take it out of full screen mode, move the window around, do "About Scenic", but the window doesn't respond to clicks or anything. Closing and reopening fixes it. This has happened to me several times. I haven't paid attention to any specifics on how long this takes or if there are any other factors, but I'll play around a little and see if I can gather more info.

OK. I'll have a look after the holidays.

Hi Guido,

I have the same problem with the two-finger zoom suddenly not working anymore.

It can be reproduced like this:

  • start Scenic - two-finger zoom works
  • open POI-Groups
  • open one POI-Group
  • close POI-Group and POI-Groups
  • back to map - two-finger zoom is dead

Using Scenic Version 4.09

BTW: please, please bring back the two-finger zoom WITHOUT command key!

Thanks Ernst. I'll have another look.

@guidomm

I'm having an issue with the application freezing. If I open it and leave the window open but go about doing other things and come back to it, it becomes non-responsive. I can resize/min/max the window, but clicking inside the window doesn't do anything. If I quit and reopen, it's fine. I don't have exact steps to recreate it, but I know the machine has gone to sleep a couple of times and I have switched around through Spaces many times. I'll keep an eye on it and see if I can find any specifics on what might be causing it. It's not a showstopper, just an inconvenience so not an urgent thing IMO. Just letting you know.

Now, using 4.16, nothing changed. The two-finger zoom dies after leaving the map.

I'm getting a little impatient.

I’ll have this fixed in the next version.
