DIY Project: Control Scenic with a BMW Wonder Wheel
Quote from Bixio on 28.09.2025, 02:04Hello Guido, hello everyone,
I'm excited to share a project I've been working on: a DIY gadget that lets you control Scenic using the BMW's Wonder Wheel (multifunction controller).
The device implements a LIN slave protocol to capture inputs from the wheel and converts them into Bluetooth keystrokes. It plugs directly into the factory harness for the BMW navigator cradle, making for a clean installation. In function, it's similar to the commercial WunderLINQ X from Black Box Embedded, but this is a fully open-source alternative.
I've thoroughly tested it and have now published all the details for you to build your own. This includes:
- A YouTube video with an introduction, demo, and overview.
- A complete GitHub repository with all the reproduction details.
Video & Demo: https://youtu.be/-cVcGIMZuJ0?si=Fl48EWhswSuZ9-s8
I also believe the core concept could be easily adapted for use with other custom controllers.
Hope you find it useful!
Cheers,
Bixio

I don’t have a BMW at the moment, but shouldn’t get one in the future again, I’ll surely take a look at this!

very interessting. I bought an newer BMW with wonderwheel but because I use Carplay I will test the Carpuride 702BS which allows as well the use of the Wonderwheel……if that is not working well I might try your solution, however electronics is not my favorite 😉
