Detour behaviour based on waypoints. This is OK, but V3 had an interesting alternative (or may be I've dreamed it)

I've logged 84,443 Km using Scenic, I was an early adopter, I was on the verge of abandoning it in October 2024, I did'nt. Now I'm (relatively) happy with it, but... sometimes I'm still mad at it.

I had (again) the issue yesterday: I was leader of a group and we followed a route that I had designed.  Someone in the group told us a good place to fuel (or to have a drink, I don't remenber 😉 ), and we skipped a waypoint. Detour behaviour was set  to "not recalculate", usually I skip waypoints willingly, and I do no want directions to return to it.

Anyway, after refuelling we returned to the route,, after the waypoint.  The route appeared on my screen, but... navigation had stopped. Cursor was over the route, we followed it but no more directions, nor arrival time. I had a moving map that showed a route, a cursor indicating my position loosely placed over the route (but not following it exactly) and that's it

Probably the way to solve this situation  was to stop the bike (and have 4 other people waiting for me at 36ºC - or  95 ºF), edit the route, delete waypoints or another manual action. But if you are the leader of a pack, simply, you can't stop.

And my question is... It would be possible to have a Default detour behaviour that would be "guide me to the nearest point of the route, and once there, select the direction opposite to the last reached waypoint"  ?

or something similar to V3 (I am not sure - may be I dreamed it -) , a splash screen saying : " waypoint xx missed, skip it? " and, if there is no answer navigation continues?

Hi Carlos,

I think I understand what happened. The option you are referring to actually already exists. It's called the "guide me back to route" button. It's available on the map screen if you selected that to be there (Settings > Navigation & Tracking > 'Guide me back' button). If you disabled that, the button is still avaiable in the navigation (big button) menu. It will appear when you have "do not recalculate" selected and you are not on the route. If you tap that button, it will take you to the closest via point.

Please let me know if I misunderstood or if you still think there is something wrong.

Best regards,

Guido

Thanks for your answer! In the "Guide me back" button explanation, it says (translation from Spanish). (...) "if you press the button route will be recalculated and it will guide you to the first not reached waypoint".  I'll test it, on my next ride, to check what happens if in my detour (for instance, a refuel stop outside of the route) I skipped a waypoint or not..

This is the English text (@guidomm - there’s a typo here as “useful” should only have one “l”).

What would be helpful in my opinion is having the option to lead me back to the route towards the next waypoint AHEAD of me. I experienced a detour where there were several waypoints passed and when I wanted to be led back to the route (via the button), I was routed back in the direction which I already had passed. What do you think ?

Yes. It’s on the list to add an option to guide to your waypoint of choice. At the moment, two options are available: https://scenic.app/help/start-a-route-in-the-middle/

When I am on a route I ignore what are the waypoints ahead and what WPT I have passed. I know that they appear on the moving map, but once they're gone, they're gone. Of course to have a display with too much information is never a good idea, but I would like to see  on the screen (may be as a configurable option)  the  number of the next WPT and the distance to it

You can already see the number of the next waypoint. That is, if you did not disable the “skip next waypoint” button on map. Settings > Navigation & Tracking > Detour Behaviour > Skip Waypoint Button on map.

If the next waypoint is a stop it will show distance too. If the next waypoint is a via point it will not show distance. I can’t change that. It a limitation of the response from a route calculation.

Thanks! I use it often, but, when I am outside the route, it shows the start as the next waypoint, But I've seen in this thread how I can select (through the "snake" window)  that I can choose what I want to do, either to navigate to the start or to the next WPT. So many features, and so short a time to learn them!!
