Dark Mode in CarPlay

Guido,

I have a recurring problem where Scenic displays the map in CarPlay in dark mode. This happens even though the phone is always set to light mode. I have the map style in Scenic set to day mode, and have tried setting Scenic’s dark mode to both auto and never, with no change. The problem occurs whether or not I am navigating.

It bears mentioning that the map is displayed in light mode occasionally, but the problem is intermittent.

iOS 16.2

Scenic 3.19

Any suggestions?

When on CarPlay it's the CarPlay system that determines whether the apps (incl Scenic) are in Dark or Light mode. I suspect your CarPlay system might have a setting to always stay in dark or light mode. In most cars this "switching" is also linked to turning on/off the daylight running lights for example.

Hope this helps/explains. If not or if you have other questions please let me know. Happy to help.

Best regards and ride safe,
Guido

Guido,

The CarPlay settings on my car have two options: “Automatic” (which I assume makes CarPlay follow the day/night mode setting of the connected phone), and “Always Dark”.

I have several other nav apps on my phone which have options to override the settings on the phone and CarPlay with regards to their use of day/night mode. Mind you, I don’t care that Scenic doesn’t offer this option, provided it follows the display settings of the phone.

What puzzles me is that Scenic used to work correctly, but no longer does. As Scenic hasn’t been updated in the past few weeks (it’s use of day mode was correct as recently as 01 Jan), I can only assume that a setting on the phone or the car is at fault. So far, I have been unsuccessful in determining what I changed to cause the problem.

Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not the day/night mode of the connected phone, but the day/night mode of your CarPlay display. Most modern cars have an automatic ambient light sensor. This is used to turn on the lights automatically if it gets dark, AND to turn the display (including CarPlay) of your car to day/night mode. So, dark/night mode of your car (and CarPlay) is completely separate from day/night mode of your phone. I can't change that.

NOTE: Some cars automatically switch their display to 'night' mode when you turn on the lights.

Scenic has an option to disregard the phone's day/night status (Settings > Colors & Style > Dark Mode), but this only affects the phone's day/night mode, not your Car's (CarPlay display) day/night mode. At the moment, it's like you describe. Scenic on your CarPlay display switches between day and night mode with your car's day/night mode. At the moment Scenic does not offer an option to force day or night mode on your car display.

It's indeed strange that Scenic started to behave differently, but I can only assume that something else changed that would cause that to be honest. It could be an iOS update, or a firmware update of your CarPlay system, or a change in the settings of CarPlay.

Guido,

Good news - all is well.

First, some background: There are two different day/night mode settings on my car. One appears to only influence the onboard nav system. The day/night mode setting in CarPlay only controls the CarPlay menu system, not any installed apps as far as I can tell.

When I selected Scenic in CarPlay, the map was displayed in night mode (even though I had Dark Mode set to Auto in Colors & Style, and the phone is set to day mode. On a hunch, I tapped Start Ride. The map immediately went into day mode. When I tapped End Ride, the map remained in day mode.

In summary, I’m not sure there ever was a problem other than a minor cosmetic one. Thanks again for your quick replies, and keep up the great work!

Hi,

I am testing Scenic currently but when using carplay it is alway in dark mode although I never use dark mode on my Iphone. I tried everything but could not change do day mode. On my Iphone w/ or w/o carplay senic is using day mode.

I do not want to spend money for more testing in premium if that does not work in day mode……I get mad with the dark mode……cant read anything.

When connected to CarPlay Scenic uses the mode (dark/light) your CarPlay system is in. Your CarPlay unit probably has a setting for this. Light/Dark/Auto. Sometimes the CarPlay units (it the vehicle it’s built into, have a sensor to switch between dark and light mode, or it’s connected to your low-beam being switched on.

So, look for a setting in your CarPlay system and you should be able to get it to use light mode.

Hi Guido,

I can try that, however this is not logical because other apps are using light mode at the same time like Osmand. Only Scenic is in dark mode.

Also check your appearance settings: (Settings > Appearance). If these are not on 'Auto' then Scenic will force to whatever you set there.

I tried both, settings for Carplay and Scenic on „auto“ even everything was set to „light“ before but scenic carplay stays dark.

Hi,

short feedback - it works now.

I switched from automatic to manual headlight on/off and it worked when the lights were off. The strange thing ist it still works now when switching back to automatic mode. It seems carplay did not like my LED daylight in the beginning……strange?
