Connect Google Street view for planning

I'm planning a trip/ride and want to make sure that the roads I'm taking are "good", able to be ridden, etc. I often encounter private roads (despite them looking like passable routes) as well as roads that I'd rather not take (road surface, etc).  I use Google Street View to verify my turns, intersections, routes, etc., before setting out on a ride.

Here's my "workflow". In Scenic, after importing a route from whatever tool (footprints, forkot, etc) I select a waypoint on the route, use the pop-up dialog to copy the coordinates into Google Maps to see the street view. This is MANY taps on my iPhone or iPad. It would be awesome if I could select a point on my route and, in the pop-up, choose" show Google Street View." This would allow me to verify the route, etc.  Better yet would be to have a "Street View" in the route planner.

I've added two screen captures from my iPad that I use to plan - I split-screen the two apps, but it's a lot of work.  🙂

By the way, no single route planner tool does trip planning all that well. I've used/tried them all, and even Google's own tools are a mess when it comes to planning a route, adding stops, forcing a route, and using the visual/street route. There are lots of opportunities for subscriber growth here. I'm a semi-reitired product person—happy to chat offline. 🙂

This should be pretty easy to implement. I'll see if I can add that for the next update.

Better yet would be to have a "Street View" in the route planner.

I'll put it on the list, but not a priority item at the moment. Also not sure if Google allows 3rd party apps access to street view imagery, but I'll investigate once I have time.

Thanks for this great suggestion!

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

B.t.w did you know you can also plan in Google Maps, and then import that into Scenic by copy-pasting the Google Maps url into the Scenic webapp? Here's a short video: https://scenic.app/help/import-from-google-maps/?seq_no=2

I tried this on my Mac (with Apple Silicon processor!). It worked like a charm. Much easier and quicker than on iPhone and iPad 🙂

Yeah, I've used Google's My Maps map maker quite a bit, and it's decent at allowing me to choose the roads/paths I want to take. However, it's no easier to see street view.

I do like the ability to show in Google Earth, though, which is a nice way to visualize the full route.

Thank you for considering adding to the pop-up (will be a good help)!

I agree that adding Street View to Power Panner is a bigger thing and likely comes with some associated API costs (I forget how many requests are allowed for free).  Here's the API:  https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/streetview

@hypermulti, thanks for the link to the API. I’ll have a look.

Scenic can import from Google My Maps, indeed, but also from Google Maps. I don’t know if Google Maps supports your need for route planning, but surely accessing street view is easy in Google Maps.

I personally really like Google Maps for planning. Add your stops in the left hand pane, and then drag the route to change the roads you want to take. The stops on the left hand pane become stops in Scenic, and the “drag” points becomes vias in Scenic.

@guidomm I didn't know that the drag points became vias in Scenic - that's a nice nugget!!

I generally don't use gmaps for planning routes because I can't remove the strange routing it creates - it creates odd waypoints when I drag a route around and I can't remove them. Example in this image: I moved the route from HW 290 up to the 2766 road, but it left the strange path (the vertical route you see), and no matter what I do, I can't delete them without resetting things, losing all my work.

Thank you for implementing this feature!  So helpful and already playing with this as I'm trying out the new planner. 🙂
