Confusing Roundabout Instructions. 3.5
Quote from sniffer on 05.02.2024, 04:27Went on a ride on Sunday and on numerous occasions the app told me to enter the roundabout but gave no indication of which exit to take. It was a very distracting to have to look at the screen while going round to make sure I got the right one. Anyone else had this issue?

Quote from Guido on 05.02.2024, 09:30I've had no other reports so far on this, but I know more or less what could have caused this. Do you remember what the turn indication at the top left of the screen displayed? Was it something like this?

Quote from sniffer on 06.02.2024, 11:41To be honest I didn't really notice that, I will check next time I go out. I was just listening out for it to say "Take the second exit" or something, which it did sometimes but not others. Thanks for coming back.

Quote from Guido on 07.02.2024, 14:54I've been trying to reproduce this, but it's not happening with several routes containing roundabouts (also tried UK london area). Do you remember / could you indicate at which roundabout(s) this happened? (I only need one).
If you like, you can send me the coordinates. To this, enable "Coordinates in Callout-Bubble" in Settings > Finetuning. Then, on the map, find the roundabout and long-press on it. Then you can copy the coordinates from the callout bubble.
Thank you and cheers,
Guido

Quote from Guido on 08.02.2024, 10:22Good incentive to add W3W support 🙂. As from v3.52 (released next week) you will be able to enter w3w terms in the search bar.
In any case... I can confirm this happens at these roundabouts.
I noticed that sometimes the first alert (far away) says "enter roundabout", and then the 2nd alert says "take th Xnd exit". On some roundabout you only hear "take the Xnd exit". However sometimes you only hear the "enter the roundabout" instruction.
I will need to report this to HERE as this is an issue with their navigation engine.

I was going to sugest W3W but didnt know how hard it would be to intergrate. I use it all the time in the car for walks. I can pinpoint a layby or even a clearing on a forest track to park and navigate streight there. Too be honest I use W3W for all my destinations in the car, even pinning the reception of hotels, you cant go wrong because even if the road changes, the hotel reception never moves. Its also useful on the bike to meet up with other people who arent in a peticular location like a village or cafe and get to their exact location. Great you wil be putting in the next update. Will set Scenic apart from the rest.

Quote from RamblinMan on 14.03.2026, 23:19I realize this is an older thread but I thought I'd add a response.
I am a new Scenic user and this is my first post on the forum. A few folks told me about the app and I'm in Week 2 of testing it out and learning it. I have been on some trips so far and I can say I have yet to have any instructions for roundabouts at all. I just have to follow the line and hope it gets me in the correct direction. In one case, I was doing a round trip using different routes, so I was going one way through this round-about and then on the way home I would be coming from a different direction through the same roundabout. In that case, the first time I went through, it showed a pink line in both directions with no direction about which one was the correct one for the trip I was currently on. That may be a unique situation but I can say so far I've never had any instructions provided on the roundabouts I went through. If this matters, all of these were imported trips planned either in Rever or Google Maps.
Based on what I've seen so far, I really like the app overall and I've paid for a subscription. Thank you.

Quote from Guido on 14.03.2026, 23:49Yeah... if you pass the same roundabout on your way out and on your way back you'll see the pink line for both those directions and it's hard to see which is which. You should see the turn instructions on the top left though (so not on the map itself). That should say the exit number in the circle... like in the 2nd post above here. Didn't you get that instruction on screen?

Quote from RamblinMan on 15.03.2026, 00:07Hi Guido. Thanks for the response. On the same roundabout issue, I had the same issue when leaving my own house. I was turning left out of the house but would be arriving home from the right. As I left my house, it showed pink in both directions causing me to question. I guess it could be solved by me not making a round-trip plan and maybe having separate trips coming and going.
I recorded today's ride on my cameras and I'm going to triple-check but I'm almost positive I never had any instructions for the roundabouts as I was specifically looking for and testing it. I did receive the pop up instructions for all other turns at intersections and such. I did not have exit numbers in the circle. I had nothing but the lines.

Quote from Guido on 15.03.2026, 00:11Ok. Strange. Let me know what your other tests bring you. When you report back could you also let me know if you are on iOS or Android? (Android will show a different kind of icon but there should be an instruction no matter what)

Quote from RamblinMan on 15.03.2026, 00:17I'll see if this works to add a photo. I'm adding a screenshot from today's ride as I was in line for the roundabout. No directions. This was a "waypoint" that was inserted automatically I think from my import from Google Maps in case that matters. I think that's what the number 3 means on the screen. Maybe that's why no other instructions? I'm on iOS. Hope to test more on Sunday here. I'm planning on using this tool for some multi-day trips as the weather warms here in our area. Good stuff.

- I understand why the number can be confusing. It simply counts the roads that connect to the roundabout. In this case where traffic coming on to the roundabout (entries) and traffic going away from the roundabout (exits) are separated, it counts those too.
so. In this case, the 3 mean the 3rd road which is “go straight” here.

Quote from RamblinMan on 15.03.2026, 00:51Hi Guido. Well I owe you an apology for my stupidity. Being a new user, I had it in my head (wrongly) that the number that popped up must be related to a waypoint or something. I went and looked at the rest of the video when I came back through the roundabout and both numbers now make sense with your explanation. I'm embarrassed. Appreciate your responses.
Also, I stumbled upon a YouTube video you did walking folks through Scenic. I've bookmarked it and hope to watch it over the next couple of days.

Quote from mattsz on 16.03.2026, 10:59@ramblinman - I'll add a couple of things here, since you're new to the game...
Be careful in roundabouts that have a lot of entrances and exits, as you'll have to count both as you progress through, as Guido says. My old Garmin GPS unit gave numbers, but it only included "exits," so you only had to count ways out as you passed by. Much more intuitive, in my opinion. I admit that there are probably roundabouts which have single access lanes which allow entrance and exit, so how would the Garmin have dealt with that? I don't know, since I've never come across that - we have very few roundabouts in my neck of the woods.
Also, always keep in mind that the instructions are only as good as the map data... and to be honest, I find the map data to be pretty unreliable, at least in my somewhat rural area. So many mistakes! No fault of Guido's... but it's my biggest problem with Scenic. A busy 4-way intersection near me was recently replaced with a simple roundabout; I had Scenic "instructing me" as I drove my car through for the first time... well, "around" is the better choice of words, I suppose. As I approached the roundabout, Scenic instructed me to turn right ahead, then turn right. Huh? When I got home, I checked out the data on the OpenStreetMap editing site, and discovered that whoever "created" the roundabout data had no clue what they were doing, and it's all labeled completely wrong. At some point soon, I guess I'll end up doing the homework to figure out how it's supposed to be done, and fix it... but it takes time...

Quote from RamblinMan on 16.03.2026, 19:44@mattsz Thanks so much for this info. I'm new to this forum as well (my hijacking an existing thread..bad form), so hopefully I've tagged you correctly.
I will say on my initial test ride I was getting very frustrated. I had a round trip planned and early in the trip Scenic was sending me in circles, having me go down one road, then doing a circle taking me down the same road in the opposite direction. It would have an arrow pointing one way while the pink Line went the other. I still don't know what I or the app was doing wrong. I do know I had time on my hands and I decided to just keep following its instructions to see what would happen. I think I spent 20 to 30 minutes doing the same loops and roads before it finally took me on the rest of my trip. For the next 3 hours or so, I had no problems.
Agree, I have a Garmin Zumo XT and it handled roundabouts pretty normally.
For Scenic, I need to figure out how to have some stops figured in when I import the trips (not just way points), and I may split longer trips into parts/destinations maybe instead of a LOOONG trip. Maybe that may help. Not sure.
I live in a rural area and tend to ride in rural areas, so maybe that was part of the issue given what you noted about the map quality.
Thanks again!
