Change Waypoints to Shaping points from Garmin Basecamp GPX filesa

Hi,

I just planned a route with Garmin Basecamp and exported it to Scenic. Scenic imports it right, but all the waypoints I set in Basecamp to "No alarm"(shaping points) are real stops and not shaping points. To change this, I have to click every Waypoint and  change it. Is there a way to change more than one Waypoint at once?

Or is it planned that Scenic interprets the Basecamp shaping points right?

Under the "more" button (bottom left) you can convert ALL stops to via points. Of course that will aslo convert your actual stops to vias. So you would have to manually convert your actual stops (which now became vias) to stops again. Perphaps that is faster.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think Basecamp makes the distinction between shaping points and stops in the GPX export. I remember looking into this when I was working on the GPX import. If the GPX doesn't make the distinction, then Scenic can't either. Perhaps I'm just too unfamiliar with Basecamp. How do you add a shaping point in basecamp vs how do you add a stop?

Perhaps you could send me a screenshot of Basecamp (with the Trip via point list) and the GPX you got from basecamp? You can send it to me directly if you prefer (use the email button at the bottom of the Scenic help page).

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Hi Guido,

thanks for the hint with the "more" menu, didn't see this.%-)

How do you add a shaping point in basecamp vs how do you add a stop?

When planing a route you can't choose if the point you are setting is a shaping or via point. But you can show the list of points of the route and if you want a shaping point you set this to "no alarm", if you want a via point you set this to "alarm".

I will send you another screenshot and a GPX file to your mailadress.

Thank you and best regards

Thank you Marc-Anton,

I quickly looked into it. It should be possible to add this, but it’s not very simple. Will need to make some pretty deep changes to the GPX parser. Any change needs to be thoroughly tested as it could “break” the GPX parsing for other GPX files.
I will put this on the list for later. Sorry I can’t be of any immediate help in this.
Meanwhile I did include the shaping point extension in the GPX Export (this was relatively easy to do), so people can import their Scenic routes into their garmins even more easy than before. I know this doesn’t help you, but just to show I am working on this 🙂. https://scenic.app/forum/topic/export-then-load-into-garmin-nav-5-6-waypoints-instead-of-bias/#postid-7709
So... some people like to plan in Garmin Basecamp and then navigate with Scenic, while other people like to plan with Scenic, and then navigate with their Garmin. 🙂.
Cheers,
Guido

I see the dilemma.;)

Thanks for having this on the list!

Hi Guido,

this is Martin, who triggered the entire Scenic --> Garmin device thing in here https://scenic.app/forum/topic/route-export-to-garmin-zumo-xt/.

First, thanks a lot for finding the time to implement the Garmin GPX extensions in the route export while you are occupied with all the work resulting from the big update. Much appreciated!

There is indeed a fine irony in what you wrote above about the relation between Scenic, Basecamp and Garmin devices:

I had suggested the changes because on the road I was using Scenic as a route editor for my Garmin zumo XT. Strapping my iPhone onto the handlebar and using Scenic for navigation was not option. Vibrations, overheating, too small a display...
In the meantime motorcycle CarPlay displays have become a commodity. So I installed one on my bike and now I am giving Scenic a serious try as my navigation solution. (Look very promising so far. The upcoming two weeks of motorcycle vacation will let me know for sure.)

Scenic is great for planning on the road. But many Garmin device owners (me included) will still be using Basecamp for preparation at home. The big screen, availability of OSM, 3D maps, the local database etc are benefits of this approach.

So there is a certain logic in "some people like to plan in Garmin Basecamp and then navigate with Scenic, while other people like to plan with Scenic, and then navigate with their Garmin."
And there is even the extension that the people might easily be the same. Moving from using Scenic to feed their Garmin devices to using Basecamp to feed Scenic 🙂

Now there is another Use Case to think about:
One of the strenghts of Scenic is the capability to work offline. On the road I prefer to use my iPad to plan routes because of the bigger screen. When online the route will be synched to the iPhone (for navigation) without problems. But without network the approach would be to GPX export the route on the iPad and AirDrop it to the iPhone. When the route i imported on the iPhone then, the difference between Vias & Stops gets lost.

This is why I would be very happy too if the Scenic route import could translate Garmin "Shaping points" and "Vias" to Scenic "Vias" and "Stops".

Thanks a lot again for your great work!

HI Martin,

Totallly understand the use cases. Thanks for the clarification.
I'm first going to focus on the export, and later on add full support for importing with Garmin extension.

Cheers,

Guido

Thanks a lot, Guido!

The way you handle it, Scenic keeps getting better and better 🙂
