CarPlay 4.04 unusable
Quote from Cornworld on 05.11.2024, 10:54Hi.
I know a lot already has been written but I can’t believe what I experienced during the last 3 days.
I had a short trip to Luxembourg. Drove a short test, 25k, with CarPlay to see if it was actually doable. That went well, had the known issues but as long as I stayed in the app or splitscreen it worked. To be sure I cleaned up all the clutter that was somehow generated while importing the routes. Saved them all as new routes just to be sure.
day 1. Load the route. It somehow decided to keep sending me back to the starting point. This went on for 40k. I knew the first part so wanted to see if the app would pick up the actual location and go on from there. Nope. Finally had to stop and remove all waypoints before the one that was coming up. Had an incoming call, app crashed and had to do this whole thing again because it loaded the original route.
day 2. 280k through Luxembourg. Well, that was the plan. Before setting off checked the route to see if there were any issues. Looked ok on my phone. Started the bike and loaded the route with CarPlay. The app added 30+k of clutter. Creating detours on almost every side way, roundabout creating small detours etc. It also again wanted to direct me back to the startingpoint. It was a nightmare. Had to constantly stop and manually push the zoom button (can’t easily zoom with the wonderwheel) in order to see what the actual route was. Strange thing was, all the waypoints were correct. Gave up after 1 hour. Had a list of the villages I would pass through and used Apple Maps.
day 3. Back home. Didn’t use the app, simply didn’t trust it.
I understand what the reasoning is behind all that had happened with scenic. But why on earth would you push out a CarPlay version that has these kind of issues? Creating some sense of hope that basic navigation would work only to find out that it is completely broken (with CarPlay) The app on the phone works better.
Fingers crossed that these issues will be fixed and CarPlay support will be there on par with how it was with the scenic 3. Please make sure that upcoming updates actually bring improvements. I’d rather have basic functionality that works then a rushed (feels like it) feature set that don’t.

Guido was very clear that version 4 was released too early, but this was still better than nothing, since then we have CarPlay back. I did a 1000km trip last week without any major issue. Yes the app will bring you back to the waypoint you missed so you have to skip the waypoint to be back on track. I would advise to have a reasonable number of waypoints like one every 50kms to avoid any recalculation issue.
I did not face any detours issue, if you do not start from the starting point, the app will send you there, skip the waypoint and it will go to the next one.
We know there are issues, like the app crashing if you go to another app and back on CarPlay, speed missing, ETA could be better,
Let us give Guido some time to fix those.

Laurent

@cornworld, I understand your comments completely. I'll refrain from answering in detail at this moment. I'm aware of all the major issues. At this moment, I prefer to work on fixing them rather than spending time answering every feedback in detail. Hope you understand. For what it's worth... we just released an article with "the whole story" on Scenic 4. If you're interested in why we had to release Scenic 4 in this state, here it is: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-the-whole-story/
Best regards,
Guido

Quote from Cornworld on 05.11.2024, 12:24Please Laurent, do me a favor, read my post once again and tell me it works.
I’m happy for you that your trip went well. Mine didn’t and yes, I do know how to use this app. Been using it for 1.5 years now and almost clocked 6000km with it.
The fact that it works for some, for others it bugs out, some have issues that others don’t experience and then take fact of all the issues we all experience says it all. It’s not there yet and in its current form not usable as a main navigator (with CarPlay) Navigate on your phone and you are fine.
And yes. I fully understand what Guido did and that he was under pressure to take action. This however feels like beta testing, fine when you choose to but I didn’t. I payed, happily and will continue to do so for now, for an app and service based on what was “promised”.
I don’t expect that all the features come back instantaneously. Heck, I wouldn’t even know how much work it actually is. I guess a lot. But what I can expect is that when updates do come out the behavior is in check with the description and bug fixes. Clearly that’s not the case. Main example. An app that crashes when changing pages is not ok. An app that creates detours is not ok. Waypoints not cleared when passed is not ok. The list goes on (in my case ;0)

Quote from Michel on 05.11.2024, 15:21Today I did a trip through the Black Forest with Scenic / Chigee Display for Carplay.
What the biggest issue right now is, is the missing knob for an "overview" of the route....might I suggest to put that functionality back into the app and preferably in a very easy to use way. Not in a second or third layer. This function is in my opinion very very important.
