Bug report - dead end detour in the middle of the tour

https://scenicapp.space/route/vhGUgvSW

Please take a look at this route. There is a glitch which I can't understand. I did only enter starting and end point using some of the settings. I did not use any vias or stops. Nevertheless Scenic added vias and especially via #9 which is a deadend. Why?

I clicked on your link and .....

Looks like Scenic does not like the road between waypoint 8 and 9. It is a white road. Is this a road that is useable or a track of some sort ? Waypoint 9 is on a useable road, so Scenic has routed you to waypoint 9 avoiding the white road and then back on itself to waypoint 10.

If the white road between 8 and 9 is useable then it is a mapping issue, if not then Scenic has done what has been asked to do.

I could be wrong but I'm sure Guido will give you an answer.

@petert is correct. Only thing I can add is that if this is a mapping issue, then you can report it directly to HERE maps in two ways: https://scenic.app/help/roads-not-on-the-map-errors-in-the-map-data/

I did not enter enter any of those vias / waypoints. I only entered the starting and the end point. And I told Scenic to use:

  • extra kurvig
  • vermeide Autobahnen
  • vermeide unbefestigte Straßen
  • vermeide Hauptstraßen

Scenic added all waypoints in between start and end automatically. I did neither set waypoint 8 or waypoint 9. This was all done by Scenic. And it calculated the route automatically. So is that still a map data error or is it a Scenic bug? Why would Scenic set waypoints it considers unusable?

Ah... so this is a curvy-generated route I assume.

Curvy routes are a bit special in that sense. Scenic uses Kurviger.de to generate curvy routes.

The way it works (simplified):

  • You generate a curvy route between start , end and possibly some stops you set.
  • Scenic sends those coordinates to Kurviger
  • Kurviger sends back a longer list of coordinates. (that's why the via points are added... Scenic uses these to force the routing to take the curvy roads.
  • Scenic feeds that list of coordinates to its own routing algorithm.
  • Because Scenic uses different map data from Kurviger, it's possible that Kurviger thinks you are allowed to go on a road, while Scenic doesn't. Or that Kurviger thinks a road exists while Scenic doesn't. (or vice versa). In other words... Scenic it's possible that Scenic takes different roads between via points as Kurviger.

You could try changing the routing mode to 'short' after generating the curvy route, or dropping some additional via points on the road it's not taking. That might help.
