Browser Based Route Creation
Quote from visiongrill on 05.04.2025, 10:22Hello,
I do some long and complex rides in the United States. Creating a route that is 1200 miles with 30+ waypoints is not feasible on a phone app and impossible with Google maps. I can use Rever to create such a route, but I have to have a subscription for GPX export and even then I will likely have to fix some portions of the route. Is there some way to have browser based route creation? I have tried the iPad app on a Mac; it works but is not ideal.

Quote from Guido on 05.04.2025, 11:13A web planner is on the list, but don’t have time for that now.
I have a few recommendations though:
- it’s better to create shorter routes (1 route per day in stead of one big multi-day route). You can put this routes together in a folder.
- you can plan on iPhone, iPad or Mac (like you are doing now).
- if that doesn’t work for you, you can use one of the route planners that Scenic integrates with.Personally I use Google Maps: https://scenic.app/help/import-from-google-maps/?seq_no=2
Google map supports up to 20 stops in the left hand pane, but besides that you can drag the route as you want. The stops in the left hand pane become stops in Scenic and the “drag points” becomes vias.
Another alternative is Furkot. It has a bit of a learning curvy but it’s very powerfull, and you can access your Furkot trips directly through the impot screen in Scenic.
Hope this helps/explains. If not, please let me know if you have other questions. Happy to help.
Best regards and ride safe,
Guido

Google MyMaps also works with Scenic, indeed. Personally I still prefer Google Maps though. The integration is a bit better (stops stays stops and drag points become vias). I’d say, give both a try and choose what you prefer.

I am doing at least two 1000 mile IBA rides this year. One is an in state, I won’t go into detail but it requires a great deal of planning to complete around 1200 miles in less than 30 hours. It takes 4 google maps exports to accomplish. I know there are work arounds to get more stops. I might try out Furkot. I am used to REVER as I’ve been using it for a couple years for the same purposes.
Web based planner would be better, it would be immensely difficult to do such planning on a phone.
Thanks for the help.

Have you tried planning on the phone or iPad? It’s actually quite fast once you get the hang of it.
Anyway… the web planner is on the list. Hoping to get around it to it this year.

Quote from johansw on 05.04.2025, 14:00Personally I prefer planning the complete route in one piece on Mac at home beforehand, but I carry my IPad Mini along which is convenient and ideal on the fly and else in most cases! My next trip starting in some 2 weeks is 5200 km, and is made as one route, contrary to the recommendations of Guido..
But when I am out there, I estimate today’s run and just cut down the big route, leaving my estimated travel. In that way, recalculation is faster and everything works a bit smoother 😊 That work is done on the iPad.

Quote from Karlchen on 06.04.2025, 01:20Hallo,

Quote from Mex on 06.04.2025, 01:43Hi Visiongrill.
I started planing an iron butt as well.
My workaround is:
Each trip from fuel station to fuel station. 200 km roundabout. There you need to take a picture anyway.
So 5 up to 7 trips in one folder, called IBA.
Start a new trip after you refill. Should work.
Ride safe and good luck, Mex

I also plan multi-day routes in one go.
Usually, I have an idea of which region I want to go to. So, first I enter the rough key points. Then I add via points on passes or sections of the route that I definitely want to do.
Then I can estimate from the total length whether the chosen route should be feasible in the desired time. Usually, I then have to shorten the route by deleting or rearranging passes/sections. This is done until the total length fits.
In a second step, I look for possible overnight accommodation and adjust the overall route accordingly.
After that, I enter the refuelling stops etc. into the overall route.
And in the last step, I save the daily stages from the overall route, which will also be driven.
