BMW ConnectedRide Navigator (GPS)

I'm currently using Scenic Motorcycle Navigation in conjunction with a Garmin zumo XT2 on several of my motorcycles. I create the routes in Scenic and export the GPX files to my XT2 wirelessly via Bluetooth using the Garmin Tread app. Super simple/reliable GPX file transfer. Three or four routes files are exported from my iPhone 15 Pro/iPad mini 6th generation to the Garmin XT2, along with one track file. I've had the greatest success by simply converting the imported track file to a route file, as far as the Garmin XT2 not making any changes to the native Scenic route. Everything works like a charm.

I have an adapter on my BMW R1300GS that allows me to snap my Garmin XT2 into the factory OEM Nav cradle as if it were a BMW (Garmin) Navigator IV/V/VI and/or the new BMW ConnectedRide Navigator (GPS). While the Garmin XT2 setup I'm currently using works perfectly, it does not allow the BMW "Whiz Wheel" to operate in conjunction with the XT2 screen, as is the case with the BMW (Garmin) Nav IV/V/VI and/or BMW ConnectedRide Navigator. I'm considering purchasing a BMW ConnectedRide Navigator, but wondering if anyone is successfully exporting GPX files from Scenic into the BMW ConnectedRide Navigator, and if so, are you happy with how the two are "getting along?" I would love to have the use of the BMW "Whiz Wheel," but not enough to go back to the hard wire GPX file transfer protocol required by my steam driven BMW (Garmin) Nav VI. I am well aware of  the various dedicated motorcycle nav devices now on the market, used in conjunction with an Android/Apple device. I have zero interest in them. Scenic Motorcycle Navigation, in conjunction with a dedicated Garmin and/or BMW GPS, is my preference. Thanks in advance to anyone using the new BMW ConnectedRide Navigator, along with Scenic Motorcycle Navigation, who may be willing to enlighten me!

Hi J. T.

In a german forum i read a lot about navigation and the problems they have using BMW navigation systems. Some of them got the fourth (4) warranty change with their nav 6 or CRN.

Some customers sent their brandnew CRN to a company to fix ghosting or to make sure it stays dry while riding in rainy conditions.

I wouldnt purchase such a unit. Even the software doesnt perform well. Telling them how many updates we get for Scenic (thx again Guido) let them cry.

Alternativ:

Chigee AIO for BMW. Lets you use the cradle, wonder wheel control, CP or AA, CAN bus connection and a lot more..

AIO-5 Play für BMW Smart Digital Display

Obviously german.

At the moment they sell a 5“ version, but a 6“ for BMW is comming up in spring 25.

I use a AIO 5 lite with a remote. Control is a bit fuzzy with just 3 buttons, but i get used to it.
Give it a try, in my opinion you wont need more hardware than this unit.

Best regards, Mex

Mex, I really appreciate your input. I've been a Garmin fanboy for years, even after the fiasco they had with the BMW Navigator VI, which I've come to believe may not have been Garmin's fault, but instead the BMW specifications for that unit. Having said that, after a couple of hours of research on the Chigee AIO for BMW, I'm very interested, especially since Scenic works so well with Apple CarPlay. Looks like a GREAT device. As you've mentioned, and I confirmed, Chigee is indeed planning to release a 6-inch version, which I will gladly wait for. Once again Mex, thanks for taking the time to explain/recommend Chigee.

Hi J. T.

Test it and it would be nice to share your experience here.

Ride safe, Mex

Hi Mex,

Will do. Sounds like the Chigee beats the BMW ConnectedRide Navigator every way but Sunday. As long as my Scenic routes are clearly displayed on the screen, I'm happy if they're coming directly from my iOS device (iPhone 15 Pro) vs. GPX files imported from Scenic into my Garmin zumo XT2. Since the applicable maps for the trip have been downloaded on my iOS device, all is well if cell service is not available. The amount of info. that the Chigee displays is amazing! The fact that Scenic has an Apple CarPlay app, thus being compatible with the Chigee, is what sealed the deal for me. I'm now on the Chigee email list, so I'll keep you posted.

Hallo,

Thank you very much!

I will be keeping my XT2 with the 3DAM E-navXT adapter close by, I plan to purchase the 6-inch Chigee AIO-6 for BMW when it becomes available in the summer of 2025. I think it's going to be fantastic, based on what I've read. The only real concern I have with the Chigee would be an iPhone theft/failure while on an extended trip. No problem, my XT2 will be in my pannier, should there be any issues. Snap it in the BMW nav cradle and off you go. I have been assured by Chigee that the 6-inch model is indeed in the works and not just a rumor. Totally agree on the screen size. A 5-inch display now seems a bit antiquated after using both the 6-inch XT/XT2 GPS units. I can certainly see why a 7-inch screen might be too large. Motorcycle navigation has come so far in the last few years. I am not a BaseCamp hater by any means, but it's yesterday's news when compared to the likes of Scenic Motorcycle Navigation. The seamless/wireless transfer of GPX files from Scenic to the XT2 via the Garmin Tread app is so easy. I can deal with the loss of the BMW Whiz Wheel when using the XT2, however, the phenomenal integration that the AIO-5 Play For BMW currently offers in conjunction with the BMW Whiz Wheel is why I will be moving away from Garmin for the first time in years.

Thanks again!

FWIW, I've been a loyal Garmin user for 20+ years, but the Nav VI issues combined with the ancient and crappy Basecamp (with associated route transfer song-and-dance) put me over the edge. Its easily the worst software I've used in 20+ years in the industry.

I had high hopes for the BMW ConnectedRide device, but used one for a weekend last year and found it truly atrocious - better integration for transferring routes than my (third) Nav VI, but so, so much worse in many other ways...especially as a navigation tool. I hope it's gotten better, but at the time it was barely a beta product, and certainly not worth the $900 they had the gall to charge for it.

For those still on the fence about Chigee, I'll happily endorse 'em. I switched to Scenic + Chigee AIO-5-Play midway through 2024 and couldn't be happier. The Chigee drops right into the OEM "Nav Prep" cradle, works seamlessly with the Wonderwheel on my '19 1250GS, and the work Guido & team have done making Scenic work with Carplay means I can control everything without taking my hands off the bars. Chigee has also been incredibly responsive with post-sale support - the one time I needed help (on a trip, no less) both their dedicated support team and the community were incredibly helpful. It was such a pleasant and welcome experience compared to the "GFY" response I got from Maxca when I sought help with their first-gen CarPlay moto solution.

On the Scenic front, when I think about how responsive and engaged Guido & team have been with the community since the forced map migration, including rebuilding CarPlay, it only reinforces how different they are compared to Garmin or BMW, and how much I'd prefer to support their efforts vs. the almost-there and has-been products we've had to rely on in the past. Onward!

if you’re still interested in you original question: I rented a CRN for a view days and and exported my routes to the BMW Connected Ride App, just like did with the Garmin Thread App. The CRN needs to be connected to the internet to get the route. If you don’t have a SIM card in the CRN you can provide a connection though your phones „hotspot“ feature.

If you don’t want to invest in an Car Play Screen and still want to use the whizzwheel have a look into WonderLinq X that provides just that for all apps on your phone, not just the BMW one.
