Bad GPS Reception

i was in the middle of nowhere and I got this screen.

when this happened it only told me to continue on the road but I had to press on the resume button many times.

my question is why this happen since I downloaded the appropriate maps?

After that when I checked the route I saw a long straight blue line from the point I lost GPS contact to my destination.
is it possible to remove this blue line?

If you have bad GPS reception, the accuracy of your position is below a certain threshold, where Scenic says, this is too inaccurate to record and navigate. Consequently also pausing after 90 seconds. Only when the accuracy is good enough again (when the message disappears), tracking and navigation continues.

I think the real question here is why did you have bad GPS reception for such a long stretch? This is very unusual. If you are outside this typically does not happen. Maybe in a mountaines area the signal is lost for a short while around a corner with high mountains on a side, but honestly this is not normal. If you get this more often you might have a hardware problem. It’s not uncommon. Only on this forum there are half a dozen people who had this. Here is one of the threads: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/iphone-11-bad-gps-reception-while-wirelessly-charging/ which links to another thread, etc.

You can’t remove the blue line I’m afraid. This is the line of recorded coordinates. What you could do for next time is disable auto-pause (Settings > Navigation & Tracking)  That will at least prevent the pausing and resuming all the time.

Let me know if I misunderstood something or if you have any follow up questions.

Guido

Hi,

Thank you fir tge info.

i did stay quite a while in the mountain wth quite a lot of curves and forest so  that could be the reason.

Note that I didnt have any FM receiption either.

i do not know if it was specific to Scenic as I didnt check the Zumo or the InReach.

one extra question if I mat. Is there a way to set a distance before I get an alert when close to a POI?

thanks again

The POI alert distance is not working at the moment due to performanace issues with large POI groups. I will add Thai again after the summer, when I’m migrating Scenic to the new version of the HERE framework.

Hi Guido,

I have travel for 15 days with the Scenic App, I like it a lot but I had a two repeating problems:

1. when I left the route for some reason and then returned to the traced route, instead of giving continuity to my trip, Scenic added more kms, I guess it is from the start and not from where I was. Before I change the course it was correct.

2. bad gps reception, the red stripe at the top, I have downloaded maps and a external Bluethoot GPS (Bad Elf Pro+) and  this the message continues to appear very often on it . Doesn't make sense to me, it should have perfect reception with the external GPS

Looking forward to solutions

Hi Polilla,

Sorry for your bad experience. Let's see if we can resolve this:

  1. What are your settings for 'Detour Behaviour' (Settings > Navigation & Tracking > Detour Behaviour)? Do you have 'Recalculate on detour' turned on? Also, are you navigating a route or a track? (tracks only get 'follow the line' navigation, and indeed will show kms travelled. Routes however should indicate ETA and DTA.
  2. This might actually explain the behaviour you are seeing at point number 1. As long as you have bad GPS reception, Scenic won't process coordinates as they are unreliable. Consequently it won't recognize you are back on the route. It's strange though that you get the Bad GPS message. Scenic has more users using a Bad Elf, so that shouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, I don't have a Bad Elf myself so I can't replicate the problem here, which makes it difficult to analyze.

I would be curious to see if you get the Bad GPS message with Waze in the similar situation as well. Could you perhaps, next time you get the Bad GPS message, open the Waze app and see if that gives a Bad GPS message as well? If so, then we can exclude Scenic as the problem.

Does your device also has a built-in GPS receiver? If so, it would also be interesting to see if the Bad GPS message appears without the Bad Elf.

Of course the general rules of GPS apply to the Bad Elf as well. Even though it is external and much more precise than built-in GPS receivers, in heavy mountainous areas, or inside, or in tunnels, or even heavy tree cover, it will have less accuracy. If the incoming GPS signal has a horizontal accuracy of fewer than 66 meters, Scenic will give the 'Bad GPS' message.

Does the Bad Elf come with an app that indicates the horizontal accuracy of the incoming signal perhaps? If not, use this simple app that displays raw values of the incoming GPS signal: https://apps.apple.com/mx/app/my-gps-coordinates/id945482414?l=en Next time Scenic displays the Bad GPS message, could you open this app and make a screenshot of the values?

Sorry I can't be of more help at this time, but I hope with these steps we will come closer to a solution.

Best regards,
Guido
