Auto-Generated Route Detour-Loops
Quote from Schuitema on 02.06.2021, 13:13As a new user of Scenic, I desire to have the app generate a circular Route. Then I want to edit that Route to my satisfaction. The issue I am having and do not know how to resolve is what I call Detour-Loops.
This is when a Route contains a little side spur that upon closer examination has the rider going out and then right back - to the main track. No matter how I relocate via-points, the program keeps these little detours that I do not want to have to see or traverse when riding.
So, how do you eliminate any and all detours off the main (circular) route?
Thank you kindly, Jim

It sounds like you figured this one out, but just to be sure... you can select the 'create route' button from the routes tab and then generate a round trip. Form there you can add/edit/remove via points as desired.
As for the 'side spurs' a.k.a. 'strange loops', this is a common issue when importing from GPX or generating curvy routes/round trips. Usually these strange loops can be corrected out though. Here's a support article on it: https://scenic.app/knowledge-base/strange-loops-while-importing/
If you can't get it to work with the things mentioned in this article, could you please send me a screenshot of one of those loops/spurs with a small description on where I might find this (street name, closest town, etc). With that I can give it a try myself.
Cheers,
Guido

Quote from Schuitema on 03.06.2021, 09:02Thanks for the response. After reviewing the options to resolve my issue, I reviewed my route and upon closer examination found a couple of via points were not optimally positioned. Upon changing these points the app recalculated the Route and the pesky loops were gone.
I do have the following questions that I am not able to resolve, however and appreciate your assistance -
1) In the Scenic Forum, how do you post? This question sounds strange as I already posted once - but now after 15 minutes of trying to create a new post, I gave up and decided to post my new questions here (below)! I am on an iPad using typical browsers.
2) On my new Route (with pesky detour loops removed) it say’s 85 miles and almost four hours to complete the ride. I know these roads and there is no way the Route takes that much time. It is actually about 2 hours. So the time-to-ride calculation is in error. I would like to resolve it, or at least be able to manually insert the time it takes me to complete MY route. Time to complete a Route is an essential component to allow a rider to consider one saved Route over another. What are my options? I prefer to always be able to edit the time to ride so that it accurately reflects me and my equipment and skills-speed.
3) Now that the Route is complete, to my satisfaction, saved and appears on the Route list, how can I change the name of this Route? As one developes new Routes, renaming becomes essential in order to allow a quick recall in the future.
Many thanks for this continued assistance. Jim

Not a strange question. In the forum home page, select a topic from the left column. Then, there's a 'add topic' button top right.
time-to-ride calculation is in error.
I'm afraid there are no options at the moment. The timings are off because map data (max speed) is incomplete or incorrect for the roads in your route. It's one of the reasons why I'm switching to a new map provider in Scenic 3. Manually editing duration could be done, but in many cases that's not what you want because during navigation the same over-estimations will take place. E.g. suppose you overwrite the calculated 4 hours to 2 hours. Then, once you start the navigation, ETA will be 4 hours from start time again... and when you're half way (duration wise) it will be 2 hours (not 1 hour) (assuming constant speed model of the roads in the route for simplicity reasons). Your best options for now (until Scenic 3 is out) is to add the real duration in the description or title of the route. Sorry.
Question 3 was already answered by @PeteRT Thank you!
