Aprilia MIA integration
Quote from adouglas on 02.05.2022, 14:46I have a 2021 Aprilia RS660. Aprilia makes a potentially nifty multimedia module called the MIA that allows you to connect your phone to the bike. Aside from the expected phone and music controls via handlebar switches, it also provides on-dash navigation via integration with their own nav app.
Pretty cool. The problem is that Aprilia's own nav application is really rudimentary. You get to choose a destination and it gives you a few routes to choose from... and that's it. No way to edit your own ride.
It would be great if the best riding app out there (Scenic, duh) was able to tie into this system.
For reference, here's the Aprilia app...

Quote from Guido on 02.05.2022, 14:57Ik expect this to be same or similar system as KTM, BMW, Triumph have. Those systems only work with their own apps and the manufacturers have not publicized any documentation for other apps to connect to their TFT displays. If you can find official documentation for developers I’d be happy to take a look.

Quote from PeteRT on 03.05.2022, 03:32I have the KTM app for my 890 Adventure and its pretty basic. Don't use it. I would try and lobby the company to get GPX file import into their app. This would then allow you to plan using Scenic which is one of the best phone route planners on the market. However I don't think they will be interested. The best thing about Scenic is that Guido wants to make the best, listens to users and is constantly improving his app. Corporations are just not interested.
It is a shame that companies feel the need to constantly re-invent the wheel. If they used Apple CarPlay and Android Auto then there would be no need for them to develop inferior apps of their own.

Quote from Guido on 03.05.2022, 05:31Agree Peter. My hope and assumption is that the motorcycle space will develop like the car space, where eventually every manufacturer saw ‘the light’ and started supporting android auto + Apple CarPlay. It’s hopefully just a matter of time before that happens in the motorcycle world.
There is a difference between motorcycle and cars though. Currently the TFTs motorcycles have is the only display, that shows speed, gear, revs, riding mode, etc. If CarPlay is supported that TFT would be used entirely for that. So, a secondary display would be required to show this vehicle information while the main TFT displays CarPlay. Not impossible as Honda, Indian, HD are already doing it on some of their models. But I guess a hurdle for motorcycle manufacturers none the less.

Quote from Guido on 03.05.2022, 05:34I have the KTM app myself. They actually use the same maps as Scenic (HERE) but the implementation is very very basic. GPX import would only be 30% of the work. They would also need to support many waypoints (vias/stops) like Scenic does, which is quite a fundamental change.

Quote from adouglas on 03.05.2022, 08:33I was envisioning the reverse of Aprilia doing the heavy lift of rebuilding their nav software. It'd be cool if they gave you the tools you need to support the bike's display from within Scenic. That way the dreadful Aprilia software wouldn't be needed at all.
The Aprilia MIA is a terrific idea that delivers a poor user experience on the software side. So the easiest path is to just bypass the app.

Quote from Guido on 03.05.2022, 08:37If all manufacturers would use the same communication protocol that would be an added bonus. Even if now all manufacturers would allow 3rd party apps to connect and even if they would provide documentation, I’d still need to implement different code for each manufacturer. A development, maintenance and support nightmare.

Quote from PeteRT on 03.05.2022, 11:31Interesting Guido thought that GPX file import would be a straight forward but obviously more to it. Personally I look forward to the day when I can use a HUD display, have iPhone safely in my pocket and be bike independent regards navigation. Jump on any bike and have great navigation. Maybe not too far away.
