Android... To be... Or not to be? That is the question.
Quote from 2BTSquared on 11.11.2022, 08:18I've noted for some time that the help page notes...
An Android version is currently in development and planned to be released early next year.
The question is, when is "next year"? I note that when you sign up to be a beta tester it says...
Once the beta is ready (towards end of 2020) you'll receive an email.
Perhaps "early next year" has turned into many years or someday?
Seems to me I've been waiting in the wings - as an Android user - a long time to try Scenic. Fortunately (or unfortunately - depending on perspective), my company issued me a new phone. In the past we had the option of choosing Android or iOS. Now they've eliminated (for whatever reason) the Android option. So, I got issued a new iPhone. Not crazy about it, but it is what it is. The upside, it now allows me the opportunity to give Scenic a test drive. So far - I'm impressed with Scenic (although testing has just started), especially with it's apparently decent integration with Furkot (my goto planner). It's nice that my work phone affords me the opportunity to try Scenic, but in the end, I want to use my personal phone (Android) for my navigation needs. I'm hoping Scenic will be an option for my needs in the relatively near furture. What's the chances of that?

Quote from Guido on 11.11.2022, 08:45I understand. And indeed the date for Android has been shifting for years. This is mainly due to me having to switch between developers due to poor quality, and having to switch between map frameworks. But I finally now have a team of good developers and early next year is early 2023.
To show you this is for real this time… here is quick teaser picture of Scenic running on a Samsung Galaxy:

Thanks Guido for the quick reply. It's good to hear that Android is a reality and is coming soon.
You mention a team of developers. Based on what I've been reading on this forum and on the website, I was under the impression that you were a one-man-band, so-to-speak. Interesting - this is news to me.
I heard through the grapevine not too long ago that you had switched from OSM to HERE maps. This news repeaked my interest in Scenic. One feature I'm keen on is the display of speed limits. I figured that with OSM the speed limit display would be spotty at best. Another app I use on Android uses HERE maps and has excellent coverage/accuracy with speed limits (at least in my part of the world). I suspect that Scenic has experienced a huge improvement in this regard with the move to HERE maps.
Anyways... Looking forward to seeing how things turn out with Android...
Cheers.

Quote from Guido on 11.11.2022, 11:29I am a one man band for iOS and all else. But I do work with contractors for Android development as I’m not an Android dev myself.
Indeed HERE has better speed limit data. It also has speed cams integrated which I will be adding soon.
on the other hand… in some regions OSM is actually better. All frameworks / map sources have their advantages and disadvantages.

Quote from TheBigBonedBiker on 10.12.2022, 11:05Thrilled to see the teaser myself! Pretty avid rider and love this app, but it isn’t on my daily driver (as a network engineer, iPhone has a lot of limitations when scanning wireless networks, so I’m more or less a lifer on android). If you need testers, let me know. I tend to be pretty thorough and like to offer feedback.

Quote from alextraveler on 12.12.2022, 12:36I wonder how much work it will be to run an Android version in Windows 11. Hopefully significantly less than developing a web app.

Scenic Android development has been a thorn in our side for quite some time. Years in fact, as some of you long-time users and readers might know. So, we understand the disappointment about the continued delays, but trust us; no one is more eager to get Scenic Android out there ASAP.
In the last year, we've taken steps to speed up the development, which is now progressing steadily, and with good quality.
At this moment, we want to share this short clip, where you can see Scenic Android in action during a basic navigation session.
To avoid further disappointment, we won't give out dates anymore. Instead, as we reach more milestones in the Android development, you'll read about it in this newsletter and on our social channels.

Quote from Rob1986 on 09.03.2023, 06:26Cool to know that it's comming!
And you're right, giving new dates only can lead to disappointments. Developing this needs to be fun for you, not a hurry job that someone demands.
It's there when it's there.

I just went a longish roadtrip and sitting there each night refining my routes for the next day on the ipad and then it just working and being there on my dedicated iphone gps is delux.

Quote from Guido on 11.10.2023, 11:42Sorry. Not giving out dates for Android anymore. This is to avoid exactly the type of questions and disappointment in this thread. I know this is not very satisfying, believe me, I know!
There's no-one more than me who wants to get Android out there asap. We are working very hard on this. The best way to stay informed is to watch our social channels and/or subscribe to the newsletter (buttons below in the footer), and/or leave your email here: https://scenic.app/help/android-version/ .
When we feel comfortable communicating about a date for Android, it will be communicated through these channels.
I hope you understand!

Quote from Zipfi on 11.10.2023, 23:17Thanks Guido, the video is a good start ☺️
your Navigation app is defenitly the best available on market, I use it since 2 years on my iphone and ipad.
recently I bought a GSA1250 and like to put a rugged outdoor tablet on it for navigation…the pnly problem is that these are only available with android.
so release at sprin 2024 would be my early christmas present 😊

Agreed! I spent money on another app that I am not happy with. I have been patiently waiting for several years.

Quote from Deleted user on 31.12.2023, 09:41As Tour Organiser for my motorcycle club, The London & South East Motorcycle Club (LSEMC), we have, until recently, been using the free Calimoto app for planning and navigation on our group rides and tours.
However, because Calimoto no longer offer their free option, and the cost of a subscription isn’t small, I and our 125 members, are now looking for a replacement, preferably as either a free or low-cost option (most of us are not wealthy!).
We have a range of members with all types of bikes and devices (phones), both Apple and Android; thus, we require a single app that’s easy to use and share, which is fully functioning and preferably free or quite low cost.
It must:
- provide cross-platform commonality & compatibility
- be free or low cost
- designed for motorcyclists
- allows route planning in the UK and overseas (especially Europe)
- allow choices of rides including one-way or circular, choices or levels of difficulty / windy routes
- Allowing avoidance of specific roads (unpaved, ferry, motorways, toll roads etc.)
- Able to record, save & share routes for planning and later use
- Regular updates
It would also be ideal if it also provided:
- off-line maps as there are many remote areas without good 4G data service
- the ability to share maps with members so we can split-up into rider groups on a ride and regroup at way-points, have points of interest and biker friendly stops & refreshments identified, road hazards, speed cameras, possibly even visibility of terrain (altitude etc.)
- the ability to see and share live location of other member on a ride, just in case we accidentally get split-up or for other more serious issues causing a delay or unavoidable stop
- Tie in with other navigational products, such as What3Words, Ordinance Survey and Lat/Long location (either classic degrees, minutes, seconds format or digital)
We understand that the Android version has been under development for quite a long time. Please can you confirm if you now have a confirmed timetable for the release and the final specification?
As I do not own an iOS device (iPhone) I rely on my Samsung S21 Ultra 5G, thus I cannot assess your current product.
However, as a professional in IT for 40 years, with a career across programming, networks, IT security and as a Prince2 Project Manager; I would be happy if you should wish to include me in a Beta-Testing programme for the Android product or as a tester of the released product to assess viability for all our membership.
Yours sincerely,
