Adding routing to just tracking - help!
Quote from Atticuscat on 07.09.2025, 04:33I could do with some advice on how to add a route to give navigation while out riding and already recording the track. I’ve managed it in the past but yesterday it didn’t work. It’s not something I do often and I feel every time I do it I’m working from first principals. (Scenic has so many options I find I often feel like this when I move beyond the the basics of following a route I’ve planned.)
Yesterday I was following a friend and recording the ride with Scenic. At our last coffee stop we made plans to separate along the route to go home. I think in the past when we’ve done this I’ve planned a route from where we were at that time to take me home. Yesterday the planned split point was quite a way away and rather than try to emulate the route my friend has planned up to our split point (it was a complex route involving a lot of very minor roads) I ‘started’ my route from the split point to take me home (finish point, with a handful of vias to shape the route). Scenic plotted the route and added a purple nav line from where we were to the start point of my planned route, which I intended to ignore because it wasn’t the same as the one my friend had planned. (I wasn’t sure how Scenic would deal with the rerouting until the planned route start so I was just going to see what happened in that regard.) So, Scenic was showing tracking paused, the purple line to my planned route start, I resumed tracking and off we went. Scenic immediately lost all the planned navigation but did continue to track the route. We continued on and split at our intended point and I had a reasonable idea of the route home from there so rather than stop again to reprogram I rode on. I’m not sure if it’s significant but I had no cell reception at this point (I use offline maps) and I use a Carpuride CarPlay which Scenic did not reconnect to cleanly and I had to open Scenic again on my phone before reconnecting to the CarPlay. (My music app connected without issue.)
So, is there a correct way to do this? Was this a bug? Is what I did yesterday just not possible? I have Scenic set to not guide me to route start but because I was already tracking a ride I didn’t have access to (or at least couldn’t find) the option to turn on guide to route start.

On iPhone:
- move the map slightly to go to edit/overview mode
- now tap the ‘edit route’ button bottom right. This will take you to the planner. The planner also has a search button bottom right to search for locations, POIs AND pre-saved routes. On CarPlay:
Since the latest version (4.24 released yesterday) this is also possible on CarPlay, in a limited way. During a navigation/tracking session you will now see a search button in the toolbar top left, through which you can add a stop to the active route or replace the current route with a new route.Scenic immediately lost all the planned navigation but did continue to track the route.
It’s hard to tell what exactly happened to be honest. With “don’t guide me to route” selected, and if you’re not on the route, Scenic is constantly monitoring if you’ve joined the route again (by looking at distance to closest point on the route). If you got close to the 2nd part of the route (the planned part), while starting the trip (like often happen with round trips), it’s possible that Scenic thought you were already on the way back

This is what I did (and have done, successfully, in the past). Route showed right up until I resumed tracking.

The freshly planned route evaporated as soon as I resumed tracking so Scenic had nothing to work with. I guess it was something like 30 miles or more from where I was to the newly added route start flag when I ‘edit route’ and Scenic showed a purple navigation line to take me to that start flag (despite me not having ‘guide me to route start’ active, at least that’s my default status) but when I resumed tracking all routing vanished.
I guess my question is, is what I did (‘edit route’ while just tracking and add a route start point away from my current location) possible or do I need to be at the route start location when I ‘edit route’, like I have successfully done in the past? Or did something just go wrong and better luck next time 😉

Yes, this is possible. But, when you edit a route during navigation (or in this case, add a start and destination to a tracking session) it will default to "guide me to route start". You'll have to change that manually to "start guidance where I join the route" after you also added the destination flag, as that's when you'll see the button appear where you can choose between "guide me to route start" or "start guidance where I join the route".
I'm not sure why the route disappeared when you resumed the ride. I tried to reproduce it a few times, but couldn't. Admittedly I did not try this during a ride, only at my desk while not moving.

Thanks Guido, I’ll put whatever happened down to a glitch. (I suspect the added tech layer of the CarPlay is the underlying cause, I use Scenic both with and without CarPlay on different bikes and the only times I see issues now is very occasionally when connecting to the CarPlay unit.)
