A Quick Review of Ver. 4,xxx as used with a Chigee AIO-5 Lite
Quote from Marts on 07.12.2024, 21:39Today and yesterday was the first time that I've used Scenic on the motorbike since Ver 4 was released.
For those who aren't familiar with it, Chigee makes phone mirroring devices. Mine is the AIO-5 Lite. It's the first model that Chigee released and has wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, front and rear "dashcams", a built in GPS receiver with an externally connected and mounted GPS antenna module.
When in CarPlay mode I mirror the Scenic app to it. I also use it for phone communications and to stream audio on those long boring straight bits that we sometimes are forced to ride in order to get to the fun stuff.
Anyway, in CarPlay mode Ver 4 of Scenic works OK insofar as the interface goes. Screen layout for directions, speed and so on is good now that Guido has improved upon it.
Nav-wise, we're relying on this new map provider. So far, I've not been that impressed, unfortunately. For the most part it seems to know where it needs to direct me but I've seen some glitches in it taking indirect routes to get to my destination.
I was testing it around town in the car these past few weeks. I knew where I was going so I didn't need Scenic but used it to test and later on to review it.
When it tells me to go down Street A then turn left at Avenue B, I'd continue straight. It recalcuates the route quickly (and correctly) so, that's good. Why it didn't calculate the route that I wanted to go in the first place is a bit odd.
As I posted in another thread, there is a bit of lag when entering/exiting intersections and changing direction. More-so when used in the car, quicker on the bike which is what matters here.
One thing that it doesn't do which maybe Guido can explain is when I reach my destination it will pop up to say so but it still continues to have an active route or ride running. Should it pop up a message that you've reached your destination and do you want to end the ride? I tap on the screen, then tap the "Stop" button. I then get the prompt to save the ride, which I do. It would be nice if this process was automated after you get the "reached your destination" bit.
Saved ride data is good. Reviewing it shows relevant info, ave speed, time, distance, max speed, etc. And the map shows either elevation or speed which is great, too.
Anyway, keep up the good work Guido, it's appreciated.

I have limited control over the route that is calculated. It depends a lot on the routing parameters you set (what transportation mode, what routing mode, what avoidances etc.). If you see some weird things like the example above, I can have a further look if you could send me a screenshot of the routing parameters that you set, the start, destination and any stops / via points. And, most importantly, the route that was calculated and the route you expected it to calculate. I might be able to tweak some configuration options to make it chose how most other apps would chose. Sometimes however, this can also be caused by incorrect or incomplete map data. For example, if a speed limit is not known for a specific road it will take a default value which could make the route with that road in it faster (or slower) than another road for which is does know the speed limit.
As I posted in another thread, there is a bit of lag when entering/exiting intersections and changing direction. More-so when used in the car, quicker on the bike which is what matters here.
Looking into that.

This is a change from Scenic 3 indeed, but it's 'as designed'. When you reach your destination, it doesn't necessarily mean that you want to end the ride tracking. So... Scenic 4 just keeps tracking until you stop it. Scenic 3 had a pop-up asking if you wanted to continue, but that required interaction while riding, which is not preferred on a motorcycle. So now I chose to do it this way.
Hope that explains.
Cheers,
Guido

I haven't changed the routing settings for V4 unless they were migrated over from V3. I'll have to check.
As for the route ending issue, as long as we're aware of it that's fine.
The other day I had it tracking/routing and when I got home I forgot to end it. Two days later I had this spaghetti of a route displayed when I opened the app as it continued to track me in the house, around the yard, going down to the shops, etc...
🙂

Yes... this is a problem. I agree. I have something in mind to resolve it, but requires a bit more time.

From my perspective it's no longer a problem now that I'm aware of it. I just have to remember to STOP the ride once I've reached the destination. It's like Strava. When I go for a run I log it on the Apple Watch. I'm forever forgetting to stop and save the run when I get home....

Quote from Marts on 16.12.2024, 18:05Just a quick one regarding tracking and so on.
On a ride yesterday up into the hills, when I got to the cafe I didn't touch Scenic. Then later for the return trip I stopped it, saved the route then started a new one to a local town where we were stopping for an icecream, a drink and to say our goodbyes.
Note the squiggly lines. I had the iPhone in my pocket and it traced everywhere I walked, including to the rest room and back to the bikes. Haha!
It pretty much demonstrates Scenic's ability to track even small changes, direction, etc. via the iPhone's GPS.
